What are budget tyres, and who are they for?

Budget tyres are new tyres from the lower-priced tier of the market. They meet the same legal standards as any new tyre sold in the UK, carry the same size, load and speed markings, and come with the manufacturer's warranty. What varies is how well they grip in the wet and how long they last.

A good budget tyre suits a low-mileage runaround, an older car, a second car for local trips, or anyone who needs a safe, legal tyre without paying for performance they will not use. We source budget, mid-range and premium tyres to your car's size and fit them at your home, workplace or a safe roadside spot. The price is confirmed on the call and you pay once the job is done.

  • New tyres only: sourced to your exact size, never part-worn
  • Honest tier advice: we tell you when mid-range is the better buy
  • Fitted at the car: fitting and wheel balancing from the van

The three tiers

Budget, mid-range or premium: what is the real difference?

Every tyre we fit is new and legal. The tiers differ in how much development goes into the compound and tread pattern, which shows in wet braking, noise, fuel use and wear.

Budget

The lowest up-front cost. The best budget tyres grade well on the tyre label and suit lighter use; the weakest take noticeably longer to stop in the wet and wear sooner. This is the tier where checking the individual tyre matters most.

Mid-range

Often the sweet spot. Mid-range tyres usually close much of the gap to premium on wet grip and tread life for a moderate step up in price, so on a high-mileage car the cost per mile can end up similar.

Premium

Generally the shortest wet braking, lower noise and longest life. Worth it on high-mileage, heavy or powerful cars. Our guide to budget vs premium tyres works through the cost per mile.

Choosing well

How do you pick a good budget tyre?

Use the tyre label, not the price. New car tyres sold in the UK come with a label graded by letter, with A the best. The design used since May 2021 grades fuel efficiency and wet grip from A to E, so two similarly priced tyres can be compared side by side.

  • Wet grip first. This grade reflects braking on a wet road. Each step down the scale adds a few metres to a wet emergency stop, so on a budget tyre this is the grade to protect.
  • Fuel efficiency second. This grade reflects rolling resistance. A better grade means less fuel used, or more range on an electric car, which claws back some of the price difference.
  • External noise. Shown as a decibel figure with a class of A, B or C. A lower figure means a quieter tyre.
  • The right size and ratings. A budget tyre must still match the size, load index and speed rating your car needs. We source to the full size on your sidewall, never a lower rating to save money.

The label is a starting point, and grades can trade off against each other. Our guide on whether budget tyre brands are safe explains what separates a sound value tyre from a gamble.

Honest advice

Cheap tyres: when a lower price makes sense, and when it does not

A lower price is fine when it buys a well-graded tyre for the way you drive. It is a false economy when the saving comes out of wet grip, or the tyre wears out long before a better one would.

A budget tyre is a good fit

You cover modest mileage, mostly on local roads. The car is older or being sold soon. It is a second car. You want a new, legal tyre with a solid label grade, without paying for extra refinement.

Mid-range is worth the step up

You do high mileage or lots of motorway driving. The car is heavy, powerful, an SUV or electric, which all work tyres harder. You tow. Or the budget options in your size grade poorly for wet grip. We will tell you, and quote a mid-range option alongside.

New vs part-worn

Why a new budget tyre beats a part-worn

A part-worn may look like the lowest-cost option, but it comes with an unknown history. To be sold legally it needs at least 2mm of tread across the full breadth and all the way round, a permanent PART-WORN marking in capitals at least 4mm high, and no dangerous defects. In a 2014 nationwide mystery shopper investigation coordinated by TyreSafe, 34 per cent of the 817 part-worns bought had faults or damage that meant they should not have been sold, and 97 per cent were not marked as the law requires.

Even a legal part-worn starts with little tread, so it needs replacing again soon. A new budget tyre starts with full tread, a known age and the manufacturer's warranty. We do not supply or fit part-worn tyres. Our guide to part-worn tyre risks goes through the numbers.

Legal and safe

The legal and safety basics

  • 1.6mm is the legal minimum for cars, across the central three-quarters of the tread and around the whole circumference.
  • Each illegal tyre can bring a fine and three penalty points.
  • Many safety experts advise replacing at 3mm. TyreSafe reports that cars on 1.6mm tread had up to 44 per cent longer wet braking distances than those on 3mm.
  • Condition matters as much as depth. Cuts, bulges and exposed cords make any tyre unsafe, whatever its tier.
Step by step

How buying tyres from us works

1. Send your size

Read the size from the sidewall, for example 205/55 R16 91V, and send it with your registration and where the car is. A WhatsApp photo works well.

2. Options and price

We confirm the options by tier for your size and the full fitted price on the call, before anything is booked.

3. Fitted at the car

A fitter comes to your home, work or a safe roadside spot at the time agreed, fits and balances the tyre from the van and takes your old tyre away.

4. Pay when it is done

You pay once the job is finished and the wheels are back on.

Are budget tyres safe?
A new budget tyre is legal and made to the same standards as any new tyre sold in the UK, and a well-graded one is a safe choice for many cars. Quality varies most in this tier, especially in wet braking, so check the wet grip grade on the tyre label rather than choosing on price alone.
What is the difference between budget, mid-range and premium tyres?
All three are new, legal tyres. Premium tyres tend to offer the shortest wet braking, lower noise and longer life. Mid-range tyres close much of that gap for a moderate step up in price. Budget tyres cost least up front, but performance varies more from tyre to tyre.
How do I choose a good budget tyre?
Put the wet grip grade on the tyre label first, then the fuel efficiency grade and noise figure, and make sure the tyre matches your car's size, load index and speed rating. Send us your size and we set out the options by tier.
Do you fit part-worn tyres?
No. We only supply and fit new tyres. A part-worn can be sold with as little as 2mm of tread and an unknown history, while a new budget tyre has full tread and the manufacturer's warranty.
Is it worth paying more for mid-range tyres?
Often, if you do high mileage, lots of motorway driving or have a heavy, powerful or electric car, because a mid-range tyre usually lasts longer and stops shorter in the wet. For a low-mileage car used around town, a well-graded budget tyre is a sensible choice.
Do budget tyres come with a warranty?
Yes. New tyres carry the manufacturer's warranty, whichever tier you choose.
How much do budget tyres cost fitted?
It depends on your tyre size, the tyre you choose and where the car is. Send your size, registration and location, and we confirm the full fitted price on the call before any work. You pay once the job is done.
