An electric car is heavier than a similar petrol or diesel car, delivers its pull instantly and is quiet enough that you hear the tyres. Its tyres need a load rating strong enough for the battery, low rolling resistance to protect range, and often a quieter construction.

On an electric car the tyre carries more weight, its drag costs you range, and its noise is easier to hear.
Battery packs are heavy, so EV tyres are built to carry more. Beyond standard load (SL) and Extra Load (XL), the newer High Load (HL) marking goes further: in Continental's example, the same tyre size carries 670kg as SL, 750kg as XL and 825kg as HL. HL tyres show the letters HL in front of the size on the sidewall, and Michelin says a car supplied with HL tyres must be refitted with HL tyres only.
Every tyre uses energy just to roll. On an EV that energy comes out of the battery, so TyreSafe points out that a high rolling resistance tyre means charging more often. The EU tyre label grades rolling resistance from A, the most efficient, to E, the least.
With no engine to mask it, tyre noise stands out in an EV. Many EV tyres carry polyurethane foam bonded inside the tread to damp the drone from the air cavity. Continental calls its version ContiSilent. The foam is about comfort only: it does not change grip, the load rating or the legal tread limit.
Weight and torque. The battery adds load to every contact patch, and an electric motor delivers its pull instantly, so hard getaways scrub rubber off the driven wheels. TyreSafe warns that tyres not designed for an EV are likely to wear quickly on one.
It varies by car. Michelin notes that electric versions of petrol models are most likely to wear tyres faster, while cars designed as EVs from the start often get tyre sizes that keep wear closer to normal. Not always, but the tyre must be right for the car. Michelin says all of its car tyres are suitable for EVs and Continental says the same of its current range, while TyreSafe recommends replacing EV tyres like for like.
On any tier, start with the load index and speed rating, then read the EU label. The rolling resistance grade shows the cost in range, and the wet grip grade, also A to E, shows how well the tyre stops in the rain. The noise figure is external rolling noise in decibels, measured outside the car rather than in the cabin.
High-mileage drivers usually gain most from a better rolling resistance grade. For short local trips, a well-graded budget or mid-range tyre with the correct load rating may make more sense.
