All season tyres, also sold as all weather tyres, combine elements of a summer tyre and a winter tyre so you can leave one set on the car all year. The compound is designed to keep working when the temperature drops, and the tread has more notches than a summer tyre to bite on cold, wet and slushy roads, yet the tyre still copes on a warm, dry day.

Are all season tyres right for your car?
TyreSafe describes all season tyres as great for use in the UK and in countries where the climate does not reach extremes, or only reaches them for short periods. That covers most driving across London, the Home Counties and the West Midlands, but not every driver.

A good match
You drive mostly in towns, on A roads and on motorways, where snow settles for a few days a year at most. You want more grip than a summer tyre gives on cold, damp mornings, without buying and swapping a second set.
Consider winter tyres
You live or work somewhere high and exposed where snow and ice hang around for weeks, or you drive to snowy places every winter. Michelin says winter tyres remain the ultimate tyre for severe conditions such as heavy snow or ice, and TyreSafe points to winter tyres where extreme conditions last for prolonged periods.
Consider summer tyres
You drive a sporty car, mostly on dry roads, and want the sharpest steering response. Summer tyres use a stiff, sticky compound designed for its best performance above about 7°C.
Read the sidewall
3PMSF or M+S: which marking matters?
Not every tyre sold as all season performs the same in the cold. Two sidewall markings tell you a lot, and only one of them is backed by a test.
- ✓M+S (mud and snow). This marking relates to the tread design. Michelin notes that tyres marked only M+S have not been tested by an external organisation and offer only a slight improvement on very lightly snow-covered roads.
- ✓3PMSF (three-peak mountain snowflake). A mountain with three peaks and a snowflake inside it. It shows the tyre has passed a snow traction test and met the required performance criteria. An all season tyre can carry both marks, and 3PMSF is the one to look for.
- ✓The EU tyre label. Since 1 May 2021 the label grades rolling resistance and wet grip from A to E and gives an external noise class. Tyres that meet the snow grip requirement also show the three-peak mountain snowflake pictogram on the label.
- ✓The 7°C point. The RAC explains that a softer compound gives better traction below about 7°C, which is usually where standard summer tyres start to suffer. In a UK winter, many days sit below that figure.
- ✓Driving abroad. Michelin notes that 3PMSF tyres are compulsory in winter in certain areas, so check the rules before you travel.

All season tyres are a compromise by design. For most drivers it is a good compromise, but it is worth knowing both sides before you buy.

What you give up
- ✓A little at the extremes. TyreSafe says all season tyres compromise slightly on seasonal tyre performance in extreme conditions.
- ✓Heavy snow and ice. A dedicated winter tyre remains the stronger choice when conditions are severe and prolonged.
- ✓Peak summer grip. A summer tyre is built for warm roads, so a keen driver may notice the difference in dry handling.
Fit four
Why we fit all season tyres as a set
TyreSafe advises the same type of tyre on all four wheels, never mixing all season tyres with summer or winter tyres. The RAC adds that a mix is not illegal but is strongly not recommended, because of uneven handling and reduced traction. So we quote for four, and if your current tyres still have plenty of tread we will say so.

Are all season tyres and all weather tyres the same thing?
Yes. Both names describe a tyre that blends summer and winter tyre features so it can stay on the car all year. The sidewall marking matters more than the name, so look for the three-peak mountain snowflake if you want tested snow performance.
Are all season tyres worth it in the UK?
For many UK drivers, yes. TyreSafe says that for most of the UK and most of the winter, all season tyres provide sufficient grip. If snow and ice last for weeks where you drive, or you want the sharpest dry handling, a winter or summer tyre may suit you better.
What is the difference between 3PMSF and M+S?

No, we do not offer tyre storage. One set of all season tyres stays on the car all year, so there is nothing to swap, and your old tyres are taken away when we fit the new ones.
