Which tyre brands are premium, mid-range and budget?
The tiers are not official categories, and a strong mid-range tyre can beat an older premium pattern, so the tier is where the conversation starts.

Mid-range tyres
Hankook, Falken, Toyo, Yokohama, Kumho, Nexen, Firestone, Uniroyal and Avon. The best patterns deliver much of a premium tyre's wet safety for noticeably less, which suits most everyday family cars.

Budget tyres
The most varied tier. A reputable budget tyre with sound label grades suits a low-mileage or older car; the weakest fall away in the wet. We never fit part-worn tyres.

What you pay for
What actually differs between tyre brands?
Two tyres in the same size can feel very different. The differences show up in four places.
- ✓The tyre label. Since May 2021 new tyres carry an updated label, still used in Great Britain. It grades fuel efficiency from A to E and wet grip from A to E, and shows external noise in decibels with a class of A, B or C. It is the quickest honest comparison.
- ✓Wet braking. According to the RAC, the gap between the best and worst wet grip grades can be several car lengths in an emergency stop.
- ✓Noise and comfort. A quieter tyre makes long runs less tiring. Compare the decibel figure, not the name.
- ✓Wear and cost per mile. Premium compounds often last longer, which narrows the gap in cost per mile for high-mileage drivers.
Honest trade-offs
Is a premium tyre brand always worth it?
Not always. An entry pattern from a famous maker can trail a newer mid-range tyre, so compare the exact pattern, its label grades and recent test results. High mileage and performance cars lean premium, an average family car suits a strong mid-range tyre, and a low-mileage runabout can sensibly go budget if the wet grip grade is decent. It also helps to know who makes what. Firestone is part of Bridgestone. In Europe, Uniroyal belongs to Continental. Avon is part of Goodyear. Falken belongs to Sumitomo Rubber Industries, which also bought the Dunlop brand in Europe from Goodyear in 2025.
OE-marked tyres
What do star, MO, AO and N markings mean?
Many cars leave the factory on original equipment (OE) tyres developed with the carmaker, marked with a code on the sidewall. If yours have one, tell us.
- ✓BMW: a star symbol. Tyres approved for BMW carry a small star next to the size.
- ✓Mercedes: MO, MO1 or MOE. MOE marks Mercedes extended mobility tyres, which are built to keep the car moving for a limited distance after losing pressure.
- ✓Audi: AO, AOE or RO1. All mark tyres approved for Audi models.
- ✓Porsche: N0, N1, N2 and upward. The number shows the generation of the approval. A higher number means a newer specification, not necessarily a better tyre.
- ✓Others you may see. J for Jaguar, LR for Land Rover, VOL for Volvo and T0, T1 and so on for Tesla.
Michelin advises that a non-approved replacement may change how the car performs or feels, so where a marked version exists in your size we quote it first. We also recommend the same brand and pattern across an axle.

Can you get a specific brand and pattern?
Often, yes. Tell us the exact brand and pattern you want along with the full size. We will tell you honestly on the call whether we can source it for your size, and if not, we suggest the closest alternative in the same tier so you are not left guessing.
Are premium tyre brands worth the extra money?
For high-mileage drivers, performance cars and lots of wet motorway driving, usually yes, because premium tyres tend to lead on wet braking and tread life. For an average family car a strong mid-range tyre is often the better value, and a low-mileage car can sensibly go budget if the wet grip grade is decent. Compare the exact pattern, not just the name.
My tyres have a star, MO or AO marking. Should I replace them with the same?
Where a marked version exists in your size it is the first thing we quote. These tyres were developed with the carmaker for your model, and Michelin advises that a non-approved tyre may change how the car performs or feels. If you prefer an unmarked tyre we explain the trade-off and make sure the load index and speed rating still match.
How do I compare two tyre brands?
Start with the tyre label. It grades fuel efficiency from A to E and wet grip from A to E, and shows external noise in decibels with a class of A, B or C. Then look at recent independent test results for the exact pattern. We can read the grades out for each option when we quote.
Can I have different tyre brands on my car?
We recommend the same brand and pattern across an axle, so both front tyres or both rear tyres grip and wear the same way. Tell us what is fitted on the other side and we can match it or quote a pair.
Do new tyres come with a warranty?
Yes. Every new tyre we fit carries the manufacturer's warranty. The fitter fits and balances the tyres at your car, takes the old tyres away, and you pay once the job is done.
