Yes, Hankook tyres are good, and its best ranges now compete with premium brands in independent tests. The Hankook Ventus evo won Auto Bild's 2026 summer tyre test and came third in Auto Express's 2025 test. Its everyday touring tyre, the Ventus Prime4, is solid rather than outstanding, with results that vary by test and year. For most drivers Hankook offers close to premium performance in a brand usually sold as mid-range.
This review covers who makes Hankook, where the tyres are built, the ranges sold in the UK, EU label grades for common sizes and what named testers found, good and less good. For how the tiers compare in general, see our guide to choosing a tyre brand.
The short answer on Hankook
On the evidence, yes. Hankook's flagship summer tyre has won or placed near the top of several major European and UK tests in 2025 and 2026, including outright wins against premium brands. That is a big change from the days when Hankook was seen simply as a value alternative.
It is not a clean sweep across every range. The Ventus Prime4, which many family cars will be quoted, was rated good by the ADAC in 2023 but finished 11th of 16 in the ADAC's 2026 test. Like every brand, Hankook's results depend on which pattern and size you are looking at.
- Strengths: wet braking and handling on the Ventus evo, strong all-season and EV ranges, wide original equipment use.
- Weaker spot: the Ventus Prime4 has slipped behind newer rivals in the most recent ADAC test.
- Best fit: most family cars, many performance cars and electric cars.
Who makes Hankook tyres and where are they made?
Hankook tyres are made by Hankook Tire & Technology, a South Korean company founded in 1941 as the Chosun Tire Company. It is headquartered in Seongnam, South Korea, according to its Wikipedia entry, which lists factories in South Korea, China, Hungary, Indonesia and the United States, where a Tennessee plant opened in 2017.
In a 2026 press release, Hankook says it runs eight production facilities and five research and development centres worldwide, including a European Technical Centre in Hanover, Germany, and a European factory at Rácalmás in Hungary. It also says more than 45 percent of its global sales come from Europe.
Hankook's UK size lists show the country of origin for each size, and they include tyres made in Korea, China, Hungary and Indonesia. The same pattern and size can come from more than one plant, which is why the sidewall is the place to check if origin matters to you.
Hankook also has a motorsport record that shows its engineering reach: it supplied the DTM touring car series from 2011 to 2020 and has been the Formula E tyre supplier since the 2022/23 season, according to Wikipedia.
Ventus, Kinergy, iON, Dynapro and Vantra: Hankook's UK families
Hankook groups its UK car tyres into named families, each built for a different job. These are the families listed on Hankook's UK website:
| Range | Type | Built for |
|---|---|---|
| Ventus evo (and Ventus evo SUV) | Summer performance | Sporty cars and SUVs; the current flagship |
| Ventus Prime4 | Summer touring | Everyday family cars |
| Kinergy 4S2 and 4S2 X | All-season, 3PMSF marked | Year-round driving without a seasonal swap |
| iON family (iON evo, iON GT, iON FlexClimate) | EV specific | Electric and plug-in hybrid cars |
| Winter i*cept | Winter | Dedicated winter use |
| Dynapro | SUV and 4x4 | Larger SUVs, including all-terrain use |
| Vantra | Van | Vans and light commercial vehicles |
Older patterns such as the Ventus S1 evo 3 are still sold in some sizes. They were well regarded in their day, but where the newer Ventus evo is available in your size, that is the one the recent tests refer to.
What do the EU tyre labels show?
Hankook's own UK size lists give the EU label grades for every size, and they show how much grades vary within a single range. The label grades rolling resistance and wet grip from A to E and gives external noise in decibels. Here are some common sizes:
| Pattern | Size | Rolling resistance | Wet grip | Noise |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ventus Prime4 | 205/55 R16 91H | C | A | 69 dB |
| Ventus Prime4 | 225/45 R17 91W | B or C, by factory version | A | 69 dB |
| Ventus evo | 225/45 ZR17 94Y XL | C | A | 70 dB |
| Kinergy 4S2 | 205/55 R16 94H XL | C | B | 72 dB |
| iON evo | 225/40 R18 92Y XL | C | A | 70 dB |

Two things stand out. The summer tyres score A for wet grip in these sizes, which is the top grade. And the same Ventus Prime4 size is listed with a B for rolling resistance in its Hungarian-made version and a C in another, which is a good reminder to check the label on the exact tyre you are quoted. The all-season Kinergy 4S2 gives up a grade of wet grip, which is normal for a tyre that also has to work in snow. Our EU tyre label guide explains the grades.
How the Ventus evo and Ventus Prime4 compare in tests
Hankook's flagship Ventus evo has been one of the most successful summer tyres in recent tests, while the Ventus Prime4's results are more mixed.
| Test | Pattern and size | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Auto Bild summer test 2026, 20 finalists from 50 | Ventus evo, 245/45 R19 | Test winner, rated exemplary |
| Auto Bild Allrad summer test 2026, 9 tyres | Ventus evo, 255/45 R19 | Test winner |
| Auto Express summer test 2025, 9 tyres | Ventus evo, 225/40 R18 | Third overall; the Pirelli P Zero won |
| Auto Bild summer test 2025, 20 finalists from 52 | Ventus evo, 225/40 R18 | Top five, rated exemplary; best in wet braking and dry handling |
| ADAC summer test 2023, 50 tyres | Ventus Prime4, 205/55 R16 | Grade 2.5, good |
| ADAC summer test 2026, 16 tyres | Ventus Prime4, 225/50 R17 | 11th of 16, grade 3.1, satisfactory |
The Auto Bild 2026 win is the headline. Hankook's report of the result quotes Auto Bild's verdict of excellent wet and dry handling and the shortest dry braking distances, and says the Ventus evo scored 1.1. In Auto Bild's 2025 test, Hankook reports that the Ventus evo stopped from 100 km/h in 42.7 metres in the wet, the shortest in the final. In the UK, Tyre Reviews' summary of the Auto Express test describes consistently strong wet performance and third place overall without an outright category win.
The balance comes from the ADAC. The Ventus Prime4 was one of three Korean tyres the ADAC rated good in 2023, but in the 2026 test it finished 11th of 16 with a satisfactory grade, marked down most in the wet, as summarised by Oponeo. It did better on fuel economy in that test. For a family car, it is worth comparing the Prime4 with other touring tyres in your size rather than assuming the flagship's results apply.
Hankook also lists an Auto Bild Allrad test win in 2024 for the Kinergy 4S2 in 245/45 R18 and a 2026 AvD rating of very good for the Ventus Prime4 in 215/55 R17. Results always apply to the size and car tested.
Hankook on new cars from Audi, BMW, MINI and others
Hankook is a widely used original equipment tyre, which means car makers have chosen it after their own testing. Hankook says its Ventus evo is fitted from new by brands including Audi and BMW, and its UK size list marks an iON evo size as a BMW fitment. Wikipedia lists original equipment supply to cars including the MINI, the Citroën C3 Aircross and the Volkswagen ID. Buzz.
Car maker versions can carry an extra marking on the sidewall, and they are tuned for that model. You do not have to fit the same marked tyre when you replace one, but matching it keeps the car behaving as intended, and you should never mix a marked and unmarked tyre on the same axle. Whatever you choose must meet the size, load index and speed rating the car maker specifies.
Is Hankook premium, mid-range or budget?
Hankook is usually sold in the UK as a mid-range brand, but its best tyres test at a premium level. Our own tyre brands page groups it with mid-range names such as Kumho, Falken and Nexen, yet its Ventus evo now finishes ahead of premium rivals in some major tests.
In practice that makes Hankook one of the stronger value choices. The gap between a good mid-range tyre and a premium one is often smaller than the gap between either of them and a poor budget tyre, as our budget vs premium tyres guide explains.
Hankook's iON range for electric cars
Hankook has one of the most complete EV-specific ranges, sold under the iON name. Hankook says the iON evo was previously called the Ventus iON S and moved to the iON brand in 2022, and that battery electric and plug-in hybrid cars share similar needs, so the range suits both. Hankook's page for the iON evo lists an Auto Bild test win in 2025 in size 215/55 R18.
What to check on any EV tyre, Hankook or not:
- Load index: electric cars are heavy and often need an XL tyre.
- Rolling resistance grade: a better grade means a little more range. The iON evo ranges from A to C depending on size.
- Noise: some iON evo sizes are listed with foam lining to reduce cabin noise.
Our EV tyres guide covers whether you need an EV-specific tyre at all.
Which Hankook range for which car
- Family cars: a strong choice. Compare the Ventus Prime4 with other touring tyres in your size, or consider the Ventus evo where it is offered.
- Performance cars: the Ventus evo's recent test record makes it a genuine alternative to premium performance tyres.
- Year-round drivers: the Kinergy 4S2 is a well-regarded all-season option with the 3PMSF snowflake marking.
- Electric cars: the iON family is designed for the weight and torque of EVs.
Two Hankook details to check on a quote
- The exact pattern: Ventus evo and Ventus Prime4 are different tyres with different test records, so check which one you are being quoted.
- Label grades for the factory version: grades vary by size and even by plant; the Ventus Prime4 in 225/45 R17 is listed as B or C for rolling resistance depending on where it was made.
Verdict: a leading Ventus evo, a middling Prime4
Hankook is one of the best value tyre brands you can buy, and its flagship Ventus evo now stands comparison with premium tyres. Wins in Auto Bild's 2026 tests and a top three finish from Auto Express back that up. The touring Ventus Prime4 is a sound tyre but no longer a class leader, so it is worth comparing in your size. For most drivers who want strong wet safety without paying a premium brand price, Hankook is an easy brand to recommend.
