Take 245/40 ZR18 97Y. The 40 is the aspect ratio, the sidewall height as a percentage of the width. 18 is the wheel diameter in inches, 97 the load index and Y the speed symbol. All of them must match what the car was built for.
V is 149mph, W is 168mph, Y is 186mph, and Y in brackets means rated above 186mph. Fit the rating your car specifies or higher. The AA says a lower rating is not illegal but is dangerous and could stop your insurance paying out.
ZR is an older marking for a tyre rated above 149mph. It still appears on many performance fitments alongside a W or Y symbol, and on tyres rated above 186mph. The speed symbol after the load index is the figure to match.
The load index is the most weight one tyre can carry when correctly inflated. Heavy saloons and performance SUVs often need an XL (extra load) tyre, built to carry more than a standard tyre of the same size. Never go lower than specified.

A low profile tyre on a 19 or 20 inch wheel sharpens steering and braking. The price of that short, stiff sidewall is less cushioning between the road and the rim.
After a pothole impact, TyreSafe advises checking the sidewall for cuts, bulges or tears, watching for lost pressure and noticing any pull on the steering. If you find a bulge, stop somewhere safe off the main road and send us a photo. We fit a replacement where the car is, but never on a motorway hard shoulder or in an emergency area.
Many performance cars leave the factory on tyres developed with the car maker, with a code moulded into the sidewall. Give it to us when you call.
Common codes include MO for Mercedes-Benz, a star for BMW, N0 and upwards for Porsche, AO or RO1 for Audi, J for Jaguar and MGT for Maserati. The same tyre without the code can differ in compound or construction, so match it where you can.
Many fast BMWs, MINIs and Mercedes-Benz models use run-flats. Look for RFT, RSC, SSR, ZP, ROF or DSST depending on the maker, or MOE on Mercedes-Benz. TyreSafe says run-flat and standard tyres should never be mixed. See our run-flat tyres page.
Performance tyres should match across an axle. Cars with wider rear tyres than fronts, a staggered setup, cannot swap tyres front to rear, so each axle wears at its own rate. We quote per axle so you can decide.
Wide, low profile tyres on big wheels take more care than a family hatchback tyre. The work happens beside the van, on your driveway, in a work car park or on a quiet street.
