4x4 and SUV tyres are built to carry more weight than an ordinary car tyre. Most SUVs live on tarmac and need a good road tyre with the correct load rating. Working 4x4s and cars that regularly leave the road may suit all-terrain, and a few genuinely need mud-terrain.

Every step towards an off-road tread gains grip on mud and loose ground and gives something back on tarmac. The honest question is how much of your driving happens off the road.
The type most SUVs are designed around. A closed tread with fine sipes gives the best wet braking, the quietest ride and the longest life on tarmac. SUV versions of summer, all-season and winter tyres are made this way, such as Michelin's Pilot Sport 4 SUV. If the car rarely leaves the road, this is almost always the right answer, even on a capable 4x4.
Open tread blocks and tougher construction for tarmac most days, then tracks, gravel or wet fields. Continental notes that off-road tyres cannot match a good summer tyre on tarmac: expect more noise, less wet grip and shorter tread life. Many carry M+S, the maker's own untested claim. Only the 3PMSF symbol shows a tyre has passed a snow test.
Very large blocks and wide gaps that clear mud, with tough sidewalls to resist rocks. They suit vehicles that spend real time off the road. On a car that mainly does the school run and the motorway they are loud, grip poorly in the wet and wear quickly, and we will say so on the call before sourcing a set.

The load rating is the part of a 4x4 tyre that matters most and gets overlooked most, so we check it on every quote.
The number before the speed letter, such as the 102 in 235/55 R18 102V, is the load index: a code for the maximum weight each tyre carries. 102 means 850kg per tyre. We match or exceed the figure in your handbook or on the door placard, never below it. Our load and speed rating guide has the full table.
Many SUVs specify XL (extra load) tyres, once marked REINF, which have a higher load index than the standard version of the same size. Michelin advises that if a vehicle needs reinforced tyres because of its weight, standard tyres are not recommended. XL tyres often run a higher pressure, so use the placard figure.
A caravan or trailer on the towball presses down on the tow car's rear axle. TyreSafe advises higher pressure in the rear tyres of the towing vehicle when pulling heavy loads, so use the laden figure from your handbook or placard. Tell us if you tow, and remember the caravan's own tyres need checking separately.
Many newer SUVs sit on 19, 20 or 21 inch alloys with lower-profile tyres, which leave less sidewall to cushion a pothole. Our fitters take care on the tyre machine so the rim is not marked, and balance every wheel. Some SUVs leave the factory on tyres with a car maker's approval marking on the sidewall; send a photo and we can quote like for like or explain the alternatives.
On a four-wheel drive car the drivetrain is set up for specific tyre rolling circumferences, and Michelin explains that the wrong tyres can disrupt the differential. It advises four identical tyres, the same make, model, size and level of wear, changed together. Some handbooks allow a small tread depth difference, so if you only want two, tell us the tread left on the others and we will give you a straight answer.
