For most UK drivers, all-season tyres are a sensible single-set solution. They keep useful grip in cold, wet and light snow without the cost and storage of swapping between summer and winter sets. They're a compromise, but for the mild, wet, occasionally icy UK climate it's often the right one.
What all-season tyres do well
- Cold-weather grip. They stay flexible below 7°C better than summer tyres, helping wet and cold braking.
- Light snow. Many carry the three-peak mountain snowflake (3PMSF) symbol for certified snow performance.
- Convenience. One set all year, no seasonal swap or storage.
The trade-offs
- Not as sharp as summer tyres in warm, dry, high-speed driving.
- Not as capable as full winter tyres in deep snow or ice.
- Sometimes slightly higher rolling resistance than a summer tyre.
Who should choose them?
If you live where snow is occasional rather than constant, do mixed urban and motorway miles, and want one fuss-free set, all-season tyres fit the bill. Drivers in hilly, snowy areas or those who want maximum dry performance may prefer dedicated seasonal sets.
