Mobile tyre repair

What happens when you book mobile tyre repair?

A Rescue Tyres fitter comes to your home, workplace or a safe parking spot with tyre fitting and wheel balancing equipment, so a puncture repair at home is the same proper job a tyre centre would do. Every repair follows British Standard BS AU 159, which allows a permanent repair only in the central three-quarters of the tread and only for damage up to 6mm across. The tyre comes off the wheel so the inside can be inspected, because driving on a soft or flat tyre can damage it where you cannot see. If the hole is in the shoulder or sidewall, is larger than 6mm, or the inside shows damage from running flat, the tyre needs replacing. We quote on the call for a new tyre in your size. Common sizes are often on the van, and other sizes are sourced for the job.

We work from one base at Brent Cross, NW2. The price is agreed on the call before any work, and you are given an arrival time on the call. Evenings, nights, weekends and bank holidays are possible when the diary allows, at the same price as a weekday job.

  • Repairs to BS AU 159: plug and patch fitted from inside, never an outside plug
  • Inside inspection every time: the tyre comes off the rim first
  • Price agreed first: confirmed on the call before any work

Repair or replace

Can my tyre be repaired, or does it need replacing?

The fitter decides once the tyre is off the rim, but this is how the British Standard and the tyre makers draw the line. Send a photo on WhatsApp for an honest first opinion.

Punctured run-flat tyreFollow the tyre makerSome makers allow one repair, others say replace.

A string plug pushed in from outside, or a can of sealant, can get you to a safe place but neither is a repair. TyreSafe states that externally applied plugs and liquid sealants cannot be considered permanent repairs. A BS AU 159 repair is a combined plug and patch fitted from inside, after the tyre is removed from the wheel, and a tyre repaired this way keeps its original speed and load capability.

Slow punctures and valves

Slow puncture or a valve problem?

A tyre that needs topping up every few days is losing air for a reason. The fitter tests the whole wheel rather than assuming the tyre is to blame.

  • A small object in the tread. A tiny nail can leak slowly for weeks. In the repair area, it is a normal BS AU 159 repair.
  • The valve. A perished valve or leaking core lets air out of a sound tyre. TyreSafe advises replacing or servicing valves when tubeless tyres are renewed.
  • The rim. Corrosion where the tyre seats on an alloy wheel, or kerb damage, lets air out around a good tyre. That is a wheel problem, and we tell you so.

Until the fitter arrives, keep the tyre at the pressure on the door shut or in the handbook and stop driving on it once it looks soft.

Special tyres

Run-flat, EV and acoustic foam tyres

Tell us the tyre brand and size when you call, so the fitter arrives with the right plan.

Run-flat tyres

Makers disagree. Michelin says its runflat tyres can be repaired once, using the same inspection and procedure as a standard tyre. Pirelli says a punctured run-flat should be replaced, because secondary damage is hard to spot. TyreSafe advises consulting the tyre manufacturer, and we follow that.

Electric cars

EVs are heavier because of the battery, and TyreSafe notes that EV tyres are reinforced for the load and may carry an HL marking. A tread puncture is judged by the same standard, but any replacement must match the size, load and speed rating your car needs.

EV tyres →

Acoustic foam

Quiet tyres such as Continental's ContiSilent have polyurethane foam bonded to the inside of the tread, exactly where a repair patch goes. Michelin says its Acoustic tyres can be repaired in the standard way. For other brands the fitter follows the maker's guidance.

Before the fitter arrives

What should you do while you wait?

Your safety comes first. These steps also give the tyre the best chance of being repairable.

  • Get somewhere safe. A car park, quiet side road or lay-by away from traffic, with hazard lights on.
  • Never wait for us on a hard shoulder. We do not work on a motorway hard shoulder, refuge or emergency area, and the Highway Code tells drivers not to attempt repairs there. If the car can still be driven safely, aim for the next services or junction exit, then a safe side road. If you have had to stop, get out away from traffic, go behind the barrier and call National Highways on 0300 123 5000, or 999 if you are in danger.
  • Do not keep driving on a flat. Michelin warns that driving on a flat or under-inflated tyre can damage it internally, making even a tread puncture unrepairable.
  • Leave the nail in. It marks the hole until the tyre is off.
  • Find the locking wheel nut key. If it is missing, we can remove the locking nut on the same visit.
  • Have the details ready. Tyre size from the sidewall (for example 205/55 R16), where the damage is, whether it was driven flat and whether you used sealant.
Step by step

How does a mobile puncture repair visit work?

→

Call or book

Tell us where the car is and the tyre size. We confirm the price for a repair and for a replacement, and give you an arrival time on the call.

→

Wheel off, tyre off

The fitter marks the puncture, removes the wheel on firm ground and takes the tyre off the rim on a tyre changer.

→

Inspect, then repair

The inside is checked for run-flat damage or a second hole. If it passes, a plug and patch is fitted from inside. If not, we fit the new tyre you agreed.

Balance and refit

The tyre is inflated and balanced, and the wheel is refitted with nuts torqued to the manufacturer's setting.

New tyres carry the manufacturer's warranty.

FAQs

Mobile tyre repair, answered

Standards we work to: puncture repairs follow BS AU 159, the British Standard for tyre repairs (explained by TyreSafe); the legal minimum tread depth is 1.6mm across the central three-quarters (GOV.UK); motorway breakdown advice follows the Highway Code, rules 274 to 287.

Can you repair a puncture at my home?
Yes. Rescue Tyres is fully mobile, so the fitter comes to your home, workplace or a safe parking spot and brings tyre fitting and balancing equipment to the car. The price is agreed on the call before any work.
What does BS AU 159 allow?
A permanent repair only in the central three-quarters of the tread, for damage up to 6mm across. The tyre must be removed from the wheel and inspected inside and out, and the repair is a combined plug and patch fitted from inside. Patches must not overlap.
When does a tyre need replacing instead of repairing?
When the damage is in the shoulder or sidewall, the hole is larger than 6mm, the tyre has been driven on flat, or it has a bulge, split, exposed cords or tread at 1.6mm or less. We quote for a replacement on the call. Common sizes are often on the van, and other sizes are sourced for the job.
Can a slow puncture be repaired?
Usually, if the cause is a small object in the repair area of the tread. A slow leak can also come from a faulty valve or a corroded or damaged rim, so the fitter tests the whole wheel before deciding.
Can run-flat tyres be repaired?
It depends on the maker. Michelin says its runflat tyres can be repaired once, while Pirelli says a punctured run-flat should be replaced. TyreSafe advises consulting the tyre manufacturer, and we follow that guidance.
Can you repair an EV tyre or a tyre with acoustic foam inside?
Often, yes. A tread puncture in an EV tyre is judged by the same British Standard as any other tyre. Acoustic foam sits inside the tread where the patch goes, so the fitter follows the tyre maker's guidance; Michelin says its Acoustic tyres can be repaired in the standard way.
Is a sealant kit or an outside plug a proper repair?
No. TyreSafe states that neither externally applied plugs nor liquid sealants can be considered permanent repairs. They can get you to a safe place, but the tyre still needs a BS AU 159 repair or a replacement. Tell us on the call if you have used sealant.
Do you repair tyres on the motorway hard shoulder?
No. We never work on a hard shoulder, refuge or emergency area. If the car can still be driven safely, get to the next services, a junction exit or a safe side road. If you have had to stop, get behind the barrier and call National Highways on 0300 123 5000, or 999 if you are in danger.
