Part-worn tyres look cheap, but they're often a false economy and sometimes downright dangerous. They can legally be sold, but only under strict conditions, and tyre-safety investigations have repeatedly found many sold with hidden damage, dangerous repairs, or below the legal standard.
The rules for selling part-worns
To be sold legally, a part-worn tyre must be marked "PART WORN" (in letters at least 4mm high), have at least 2mm of tread across the full width, and be free of dangerous damage. Many sellers fail to meet these basics.
The hidden risks
- Unseen internal damage from previous impacts or being driven flat.
- Improper past repairs outside the safe zone.
- Old age, a part-worn can be near its age limit already.
- Short remaining life, starting at 2–3mm means buying again soon.
The real cost
Because a part-worn may start with only a couple of millimetres of usable tread, the cost-per-mile can be worse than a new budget tyre. Add the safety unknowns and the maths rarely favours part-worns. Compare with budget vs premium new tyres.
A safer bargain
If budget is the concern, a well-reviewed new budget tyre gives you full tread, a known history and the tyre label ratings. We fit budget and premium new tyres at your location across London and Birmingham. Book a fit.
