What does emergency tyre replacement include?

You already know the tyre is beyond repair, whether a garage said so, you can see the cords, or the damage is plainly in the sidewall. This page is about what happens next: which tyre goes on, how it is matched to the rest of the car, and what becomes of the old one.

Should the new tyre match the one across the axle?

A new tyre is fitted to a car, not just to a wheel. What sits on the other side of the same axle decides how the car behaves.

The law requires the two tyres on an axle to be the same type of construction, which in practice means radial with radial; mixing cross-ply and radial on one axle is illegal. They should also be the same size, and we will not fit a different size from the one opposite. The same tread pattern and brand is not a legal requirement, but it is what we recommend, because two different patterns grip differently in the wet and the car can feel uneven under braking.

So before we fit, we look at the tyre across the axle. If it is the same pattern with plenty of tread, one new tyre is the right answer. If it is worn, old or a different make, we tell you and offer a pair, and the decision stays with you. What happens to the old tyre?

We take it away with us. Waste tyres are controlled waste in the UK, so they have to be handled by a registered waste carrier rather than left by the kerb or put in a bin, and ours go for recycling into crumb rubber and fuel. How soon can we get there?

It depends on the distance from our Brent Cross base, so we give you a realistic time when you call rather than promise one. Same-day and 24-hour callouts run where a van is free; out of hours the 24 hour tyre service is the same fitters on the same vans. Making an enquiry is free, there is no deposit, and you pay when the new tyre is on the car. We fit on a driveway, at work, in a car park that allows it, or on a safe side road; we cannot fit on a live motorway or a red route, so if the car is there it needs recovering to somewhere safe first.
