Our M6 coverage runs from J1 at Rugby, through Coventry, Spaghetti Junction and the Black Country to J11 at Cannock. J2 to J4 has no hard shoulder; from J4 to J10a it opens as a lane at busy times, so use an emergency area or follow the gantries, and if you can't, the Highway Code; J10a to J11 keeps a normal one. Corley (J3 to J4) and Hilton Park (J10a to J11) are the only services. From north London it is a long drive.

Before anything else
Get off the live carriageway
If you can still control the car safely, leave at the next junction or pull into a services. If not, use the hard shoulder or an emergency area rather than a running lane, but never as a place to wait for a fitter: nobody can change a wheel there.
If you cannot move
Put your hazards on. If it is safe, get everyone out on the passenger side and behind the barrier; if not, stay in with seatbelts on. Call 999 if you are in a live lane or in danger. Otherwise call the road operator (details below) and get moved to a place of safety. On a smart motorway use an emergency area and the orange SOS phone, and do not rejoin until the signals are set.

What can we do once you are off the M6?
Corley, Hilton Park or a Coventry or Walsall car park, with permission, is where a Brent Cross fitter meets you on the M6, frank about the distance.
Puncture repair once you are off the M6
M6 puncture repair is about distance twice over. A clean hole in the middle band, caught before the tyre ran soft, is patched to BS AU 159; driven from Coventry to Corley losing air, the liner is chafed and the tyre finished. Brent Cross to Coventry is roughly a hundred miles; wait at Corley and we come, or we say so.

Between J2 and J4 there is no hard shoulder; from J4 to J10a it may be in use as a lane, so make for an emergency area or follow the gantries. Blowout? If it still steers, take the next exit or emergency area; if not, pull far left, hazards on, and stay belted in on 999 unless the barrier is safely reachable.

A keyless or rounded locking nut on the M6 is doubly awkward: recovery cannot get the wheel off, and the fitter is coming from London. Get recovered to a Coventry or Walsall car park, then ring. We bring the extraction kit, take the nut off and fit a standard replacement; if a nearer specialist would serve you better, we say so.

West Midlands freight runs all night on the M6. Corley (J3 to J4) and Hilton Park (J10a to J11) trade 24 hours, the only staffed car parks on the motorway; through Birmingham there is nothing. We answer at any hour, but the drive from Brent Cross is long, so we ask whether a nearer fitter suits you better.

J3 Bedworth, puncture picked up near Coventry
Pressure warning between J2 and J3 on all-lane running. With the steering still sound, leave at J3 for Bedworth and park in a side road, where a clean hole in the central band gets a patch-plug.
J6 Spaghetti Junction, blowout on the elevated ramps
A rear shreds on the Gravelly Hill ramps, nowhere to stand. It still steers, so you drive slowly to the first Erdington exit and a side road; the replacement comes with a rim check.
Hilton Park services, van keys but no locking nut key
Past J10a a van goes soft, locking key at the depot. Hilton Park is just ahead, so it pulls onto the Moto site; our extraction set frees the nut and a standard one goes on.

You are in London; do you really come to the M6?
We do. Our only base is Brent Cross NW2, so Rugby at J1 is far and Cannock at J11 further; the junction table gives figures. If the tyre can wait in a Coventry or Walsall car park, with the operator's permission, we come, or we say so.
I have stopped in an emergency area between J2 and J3, what happens now?
All-lane running, so you did the right thing. Get out on the passenger side and behind the barrier if safe, then use the SOS phone. National Highways can close the lane and move the car; a breakdown provider takes it on to Corley.
Is it better to use the M6 Toll if I have a slow puncture?
A leaking tyre needs stopping, not 27 more miles. The M6 Toll belongs to Midland Expressway, not National Highways; the toll still applies, and its only services are Norton Canes between T6 and T7. Leave at the next junction and call from a car park.
Can you meet me at Corley services?
A van on one carriageway cannot reach the other, so say which Corley site you are on. Open 24 hours and run by Welcome Break, it is the sensible waiting point between Rugby and Coleshill; ask the staff first, as we work with the site's permission.
My tyre burst at Spaghetti Junction, where do I go?
J6's ramps have no refuge: if it still steers, take the first Erdington or Aston exit; if not, hazards on, belt on, dial 999. The A38(M) leads into the Birmingham Clean Air Zone, everything inside the A4540.
Which M6 services on the Birmingham stretch are open overnight?
Only two between Rugby and Cannock, Corley (J3 to J4) and Hilton Park (J10a to J11), both trading 24 hours. Nothing sits between Coleshill and Wolverhampton, the whole Birmingham section, so overnight your options are a junction exit and a retail park or side road.
The hard shoulder is open as a running lane near Walsall, is that normal?
Through the Black Country, yes: J4 to J10a is a smart motorway, so do not count on a hard shoulder there; J10a to J11a keeps a normal one. Never assume a refuge; head for an emergency area or exit, and a red X means closed.
Is it worth calling a London fitter for a tyre at Corley services on the M6?
Sometimes. Corley between J3 and J4 is about a hundred miles from Brent Cross, so the callout reflects that. An unusual size or a stuck locking nut, and time to wait at Welcome Break, can make sense; if a Coventry fitter is nearer, we say so.
The tyre has failed between J10a and J11 on the M6 and the car is stuck, what now?
J10a to J11 has a hard shoulder: on it, use the SOS phone. In a live lane, call 999 and get behind the barrier only if safe; otherwise stay belted in, hazards on. A breakdown provider recovers the car to Hilton Park or a Cannock side road.
