About the M54

The M54 starts at M6 J10a north of Wolverhampton and runs west to Wellington, where it becomes the A5 for Shrewsbury. Its traffic is commuters to the i54 business park at J2, Telford's estates, RAF Cosford near J3 and holidaymakers bound for Wales, so it is busiest at shift change and on summer Fridays. Telford services at J4 is the only services, but every junction drops onto an A road with a town close by, even if that is a supermarket in Shifnal.

Before anything else
Get off the live carriageway
If you can still control the car safely, leave at the next junction or pull into a services. If not, use the hard shoulder or an emergency area rather than a running lane, but never as a place to wait for a fitter: nobody can change a wheel there.
If you cannot move
Put your hazards on. If it is safe, get everyone out on the passenger side and behind the barrier; if not, stay in with seatbelts on. Call 999 if you are in a live lane or in danger. Otherwise call the road operator (details below) and get moved to a place of safety. On a smart motorway use an emergency area and the orange SOS phone, and do not rejoin until the signals are set.

What can we do once you are off the M54?
From Featherstone at J1 to Wellington at J7 we come to the parked car at Telford services, i54, Albrighton or a Telford Centre car park, if permitted.
Puncture repair once you are off the M54
Commuters to i54 tend to notice a slow puncture on the M54 as a vibration that was not there on the A449. Stop at the next junction, because a tyre that has lost a little air can usually be repaired, while one driven on the rim cannot. A small hole in the middle band gets a BS AU 159 patch-plug.

Caravans make the M54 a road where overloaded tyres let go. Hold the steering, ease off and get to J3, J4 or J5 if the outfit still rolls. One that cannot move is a recovery job first: behind the barrier, then National Highways on 0300 123 5000. We meet the truck at Telford services, Shifnal or Wellington, trailer sizes included if warned.

At Telford services or an i54 car park, if permitted, a driver can end up beside a spare they cannot fit because the locking nut key is missing or sheared. A faint shudder starts on the M54 that was not there on the A449, and the pressure reading is dropping. Come off at J2, drive into the i54 business park and stop in your building's car park.
J4 Telford services: caravan tyre lets go on a Friday
The caravan starts snaking westbound before J4 and one of its tyres has shredded. Slow with the car straight, get onto the J4 roundabout and into Telford services. Photograph the surviving trailer tyre.
J7 Wellington: locking nut sheared where the motorway ends
You reach Wellington, where the M54 becomes the A5, with a flat, jack up in a town car park and the locking key shears off. Removal tools take the broken nut off without scoring the alloy.

Where are the services on the M54?
Only one: Telford services at J4, run by Welcome Break, on the junction roundabout so it can be reached from both directions. There is nothing between the M6 and J4, so heading west from Wolverhampton with a soft tyre, J1, J2 or J3 are the alternatives.
Can you fit a tyre at the i54 business park?
The roads and staff car parks at i54 by J2 are wide and flat, one of the easier places on the M54 for us. On a private company car park, check with security that a van can come in, then tell us the building name.
I pulled onto the hard shoulder by RAF Cosford. Will you come out to the motorway?
No. The hard shoulder between J3 and J4 is a live edge, not a place for anyone to work. Leave by the passenger door, get behind the barrier and tell National Highways (0300 123 5000). Once recovery has taken you into Albrighton or Shifnal, we take over.
How long is the drive from London to Telford?
Telford services at J4 is a drive of around two and a half hours from Brent Cross off peak, and Wellington at J7 nearer three. We do not keep a van in the West Midlands; if a local outlet can reach you sooner, use it.
Does the M54 have a smart section with no hard shoulder?
No. The M54 keeps its hard shoulder all the way from the M6 to Wellington. That does not make the shoulder a place to change a wheel; it only means there is somewhere to stop while recovery is arranged.
Which end of the M54 is nearer for you?
The M6 end. Coming from London we arrive at M6 J10a and work west, so Featherstone and the i54 park at J1 and J2 are reached before Shifnal, Telford and Wellington. Given the choice, stop at the eastern junctions.
Will you fit tyres to a caravan or trailer that failed on the M54?
Usually, provided you give us the exact size and load rating from the sidewall when you call and the outfit is parked somewhere flat like Telford services. Trailer tyres are not always on the van, so a clear photo of the markings avoids a wasted journey.
Will you fit a tyre at home in Shifnal or Albrighton after an M54 puncture?
A driveway in Shifnal or Albrighton is easier than any junction, as long as the car sits level and the van can pull up alongside. Tell us the house number and what the sidewall says; the old tyre leaves with us.
Stuck on the M54 near RAF Cosford with a car that will not roll, what happens?
Recovery comes before anything we do. Get out on the passenger side, stand behind the barrier and report the car to National Highways on 0300 123 5000. The recovery driver can take you into Albrighton, Telford services at J4 or Shifnal. Ring us from there.
