Hendon Way and Watford Way are red routes with no hard shoulder, and the A41 bypasses past Watford, Hemel Hempstead, Berkhamsted and Tring are dual carriageways without one either. With a failing tyre and the car still steady, take the next exit to a town car park. If not, pull well left and ring 999, then TfL or the police, then us.
The A41 begins near Regent's Park and runs through Swiss Cottage as Finchley Road, then as Hendon Way straight past our Brent Cross base, over the North Circular and up Watford Way to Apex Corner. Edgware Way carries it through Stanmore to the Watford bypass and M1 junction 5, after which it skirts Kings Langley, Hemel Hempstead, Berkhamsted and Tring, crosses Aylesbury and reaches Bicester. Inside London it is a TfL red route; beyond the M1 a county road. Either way there is no run-off.
If you can still control the car safely, leave at the next junction or pull into a services. If not, use the hard shoulder or an emergency area rather than a running lane, but never as a place to wait for a fitter: nobody can change a wheel there.
Put your hazards on. If it is safe, get everyone out on the passenger side and behind the barrier; if not, stay in with seatbelts on. Call 999 if you are in a live lane or in danger. Otherwise call the road operator (details below) and get moved to a place of safety. On a smart motorway use an emergency area and the orange SOS phone, and do not rejoin until the signals are set.

Hendon Way passes the end of our road, so the A41 is home ground: Swiss Cottage to Bicester, from Brent Cross to Colne Valley at Watford.
Hendon Way runs past our own unit, and its punctures come from the rough joints around Brent Cross and Fiveways plus screws dropped by builders' vans on Watford Way. Pull into Brent Cross, a Mill Hill street or a Hemel car park and a central puncture no wider than 6 mm is sealed from behind the tread.
How a mobile puncture repair is done →Between Apex Corner and the M1 the A41 moves at speed, and between Hemel and Aylesbury more so, so a burst needs a calm hand: ease off without sudden braking, and, if it steers true, take the next slip towards Kings Langley or Tring. On Hendon Way a blow-out blocks a red-route lane; ease into a side road if it steers.
What to do after a burst tyre →Lost the locking wheel nut key somewhere between Swiss Cottage and Bicester? It happens to commuters, hire cars and any car that has seen several garages. Get off the A41 into a station car park at Mill Hill Broadway, Berkhamsted or Tring, or a shopping centre at Brent Cross or Watford. We remove rounded locking nuts and keep the wheel unmarked.
How locking wheel nuts are removed →Late at night Hendon Way and Watford Way turn into an open road and the Hertfordshire bypasses empty out with long dark gaps between exits. If it still steers safely, ease a failing tyre off the road: Brent Cross, a Hendon side street, Colne Valley at Watford. Our unit is on the A41 itself, so those are our shortest night runs.

Heading north from Hendon the tyre light flickers on near Mill Hill Circus. Watford Way is a red route, so turn towards the Broadway and park at Mill Hill Broadway station. A central screw is repaired there.
Between Stanmore and Berrygrove the offside front bursts at speed. Ease off with no sudden braking and, if it holds a straight line, take M1 J5 and the A4008 to Colne Valley retail park.
A slow flat on the Berkhamsted bypass and no locking wheel nut key, because the last garage kept it. Leave at the A416 and park at Berkhamsted station. The nut comes off and standard nuts go on.
