A blowout on the Watford bypass or Watford Way gives you nowhere to pull over. Keep it straight, slow down and exit at the next junction with the car in hand; the tyre goes on wherever you stop safely.
Traffic on the A41 bypasses between Berrygrove and Tring travels at dual carriageway speed, and a burst tyre there pulls hard towards one side. On Watford Way the speeds are lower but the red route leaves no stopping space. Grip the wheel, lift off without heavy braking and, if steerable, signal for the next exit: Mill Hill Circus, the A414 at Hemel, the A416 for Berkhamsted. Fiveways Corner and Apex Corner are not places to stop.
When the car cannot travel any further, switch on hazard lights, leave by the nearside doors when traffic allows, keep well clear of the lanes and dial 999, adding TfL on the London section. With the car resting somewhere safe, send the size and a picture. A replacement is fitted where you are, and the fitter checks the rim for dents and the matching tyre on that axle for scorching.

After a burst on the A41 near Aylesbury, keep going slowly to the next exit, and only if the car is controllable. Walton Street on the A413, roads near Aylesbury station, and residential streets in Fairford Leys or Berryfields are places to stop. Tell us which road you left and the nearest landmark, and stay out of the car if it sits near traffic.
