The M40 keeps a conventional hard shoulder, but we never fit on it. Still under control, get to Beaconsfield, Oxford, Cherwell Valley or Warwick services, or off at the next exit, then call. If not, hard shoulder, everyone behind the barrier, and National Highways on 0300 123 5000, or 999 in a live lane, then recovery to safety; we take over there.

Denham at J1 to Longbridge Island at J15, the M40 is the London to Birmingham road for business saloons on run-flats, Chiltern commuters, Bicester Village coaches and Oxford overflow at J8 and J9. The Stokenchurch cutting between J5 and J6 is where tired tyres let go, and the rural gaps north of Banbury put the next exit ten miles off. A hard shoulder runs the whole way, with no all-lane running, but it is an emergency stop, not a workplace.

Before anything else
Get off the live carriageway
If you can still control the car safely, leave at the next junction or pull into a services. If not, use the hard shoulder or an emergency area rather than a running lane, but never as a place to wait for a fitter: nobody can change a wheel there.
If you cannot move
Put your hazards on. If it is safe, get everyone out on the passenger side and behind the barrier; if not, stay in with seatbelts on. Call 999 if you are in a live lane or in danger. Otherwise call the road operator (details below) and get moved to a place of safety. On a smart motorway use an emergency area and the orange SOS phone, and do not rejoin until the signals are set.

What can we do once you are off the M40?
Denham J1 to Longbridge Island J15: parked at Beaconsfield, Oxford or Cherwell Valley services, we replace run-flats, repair conventional punctures and free rounded locking nuts.
Puncture repair once you are off the M40
Much M40 traffic rides on run-flats. One carries you to Beaconsfield, Oxford or Cherwell Valley within the handbook's speed and distance, but driven deflated its reinforced sidewall is damaged and it is replaced, never repaired. A conventional tyre stopped early is different: a nail in the centre band is patched to BS AU 159 at the services.

The Stokenchurch cutting between J5 and J6, descent southbound, climb northbound, finds aged or under-inflated tyres. If one bursts, steer straight, ease onto the hard shoulder and get over the barrier; the shoulder is for waiting, not a jack. Ring National Highways, then be towed to Stokenchurch, Handy Cross or Oxford services for the new tyre.

Company cars fill the M40, and their locking nut keys live in a glovebox until needed. A missing key, or one rounded on a 19-inch alloy, stops a spare going on at Beaconsfield services. We remove it with dedicated tooling, wheel finish untouched, fit a plain nut and sort the tyre; tell us the car before the van leaves.

Bicester Village coaches, early airport runs and overnight lorries keep the M40 busy after dark. All four service areas trade 24 hours, Beaconsfield at J2 nearest us; treat them as the destination and ring from there with the tyre size. North of Banbury in the small hours we are honest about the drive and whether recovery to a town comes first.

Beaconsfield services, run-flat warning after the M25
Joining from the M25 at J1a, the run-flat light comes on. Beaconsfield at J2 is inside the handbook's distance, so you park there, away from the coach bays. Driven deflated, a run-flat is only ever replaced.
J5 Stokenchurch cutting, tyre burst on the descent
A tired front lets go southbound in the cutting. Straight onto the hard shoulder, over the barrier, phone National Highways. Recovery lifts the car to Stokenchurch village at J5, where the replacement goes on, rim checked first.
J9 Bicester Village, locking wheel nut key lost
A puncture near Wendlebury at J9, locking key at home. Park at Bicester Village and tell the attendants a fitter is due. The nut winds off, alloy unmarked, a plain nut goes on, tyre sorted.

Questions drivers on the M40 ask.
I have a run-flat warning at Stokenchurch, can I keep going to Oxford services?
Usually, within the handbook's speed and distance; Oxford services at J8a is inside that for most cars from J5. If the car pulls or the tyre rumbles, stop sooner at Stokenchurch village from J5 or Thame from J7. It needs replacing; stopping early protects the wheel.
Does the M40 have emergency areas or a hard shoulder?
A conventional hard shoulder the whole way from Denham to Warwick, no all-lane running, no emergency areas. It is still only for stopping, getting behind the barrier and phoning; we meet you at services or off the motorway, never on the shoulder.
Can you fit at Beaconsfield services?
With the operator's permission. Beaconsfield at J2 is reached from both carriageways, so it suits anything between the M25 and High Wycombe. Park in the car area rather than the coach bays, tell reception a fitter is on the way and keep inside the parking time limit.
I am at Warwick services, is that too far from London for you?
The top of our M40 coverage; the junction table gives the off-peak drive for J12 and J13, and we say so plainly rather than promise better. Tell us which Warwick site you are on; they sit on opposite carriageways and the van cannot cross.
Which M40 services are open 24 hours?
All four: Beaconsfield at J2, Oxford at J8a, Cherwell Valley at J10 and Warwick between J12 and J13. Nothing sits between Beaconsfield and Oxford, so from Handy Cross or Stokenchurch a High Wycombe or Thame car park may be closer than either.
I have a flat near Bicester Village at J9, where should I wait?
My tyre went on the Stokenchurch descent southbound, where is the next place to stop?
Hard shoulder first if the tyre has failed, then behind the barrier and phone National Highways. Only losing air, J5 for Stokenchurch village comes after the cutting and the Handy Cross retail parks follow at J4; recovery brings you to one of those for the fitting.
Can you replace a run-flat at Oxford services on the M40 the same day?
Run-flat sizes for M40 saloons often need sourcing, and Oxford services at J8a is open around the clock. Send the sidewall marking, run-flat code such as RSC, RFT or ROF included, with your location; same-day depends on stock for that size.
I have a flat near Warwick services and the car cannot move, what should I do on the M40?
Warwick has a site each side between J12 and J13 and the M40 keeps a hard shoulder: stop on it, behind the barrier, ring National Highways. Ask recovery for your side's Warwick site or the Gaydon museum car park, then call; the drive is long.
