Nowhere on the A34 is there a hard shoulder. On the Oxfordshire trunk section that means driving on to Peartree services or off at the next interchange; in Birmingham it means turning off the Stratford Road or Walsall Road into a side street or shop car park. A car that will not roll means 999, then National Highways on the Oxford stretch, then us.

Two different roads carry the A34 number here. The first is the National Highways trunk route from M40 junction 9 at Bicester, past Kidlington and Peartree, round the west of Oxford and past Abingdon and Didcot to the M4 at Chieveley: grade-separated, heavy with Southampton lorries, no hard shoulder. The second is Birmingham's council-run A34: Stratford Road through Sparkhill into Digbeth, then Birchfield Road through Perry Barr to Walsall. Kerbs and potholes do the damage there; on the Oxford bypass it is speed and debris.

Before anything else
Get off the live carriageway
If you can still control the car safely, leave at the next junction or pull into a services. If not, use the hard shoulder or an emergency area rather than a running lane, but never as a place to wait for a fitter: nobody can change a wheel there.
If you cannot move
Put your hazards on. If it is safe, get everyone out on the passenger side and behind the barrier; if not, stay in with seatbelts on. Call 999 if you are in a live lane or in danger. Otherwise call the road operator (details below) and get moved to a place of safety. On a smart motorway use an emergency area and the orange SOS phone, and do not rejoin until the signals are set.

What can we do once you are off the A34?
Whichever A34 you are on, Oxford's trunk road or Birmingham's Stratford Road, the job happens where the car is parked: Peartree, Seacourt, Fairacres, the One Stop centre.
Puncture repair once you are off the A34
On the Oxford bypass a puncture shows as a wobble between Peartree and Hinksey Hill, so never halt in a live lane. If it still handles normally, ease off to a park and ride or Peartree services, where a central-tread hole of 6 mm or under is repaired. In Birmingham it is a screw off Stratford Road.

A blow-out between Abingdon and Didcot happens at motorway speed without motorway margins. Grip the wheel, let the speed decay and use Milton Interchange or Marcham to get clear. A burst on Birchfield Road is slower but the Perry Barr kerbs can crack the rim too. We fit the new tyre in a car park and inspect the wheel.

A missing, broken or wrong locking wheel nut key can stall a roadside tyre change on the A34. Do not wait in a lay-by south of Oxford while somebody drives the key out. Reach Peartree, a park and ride, an Abingdon car park or a Sparkbrook side street, and we remove the nut with tools that leave the alloy unmarked.

The Oxfordshire A34 runs freight round the clock, so a 2 am failure between Chieveley and the M40 can happen. Peartree services is the natural night meeting point: open and on the interchange. On the Birmingham A34 the late hazard is a pothole on Newtown Row, and a 24-hour supermarket car park is where to wait.

Peartree Interchange, pressure warning on the way to Kidlington
Southbound from Bicester the tyre light comes on before Peartree. Take the interchange roundabout into Peartree services, in a bay clear of the coaches. A nail in the central tread gets an inside patch-plug there.
Milton Interchange, blow-out heading for Didcot
A front tyre lets go between Marcham and Milton. Keep the wheel straight, let the car slow and leave at Milton for the A4130, stopping at Didcot's Orchard Centre. We fit the replacement there.
Perry Barr, kerb strike on Birchfield Road
A pothole beside the Birchfield Road bus lane slams the tyre into the kerb and the sidewall bulges. Turn into the One Stop car park at Perry Barr. Bulges are never repairable; a new tyre goes on.

Which A34 do you cover, the Oxford one or the Birmingham one?
Both, and this page treats them separately because they behave differently. The Oxfordshire A34 is the National Highways trunk road from M40 junction 9 round Oxford to Chieveley; the Birmingham A34 is the council's Stratford Road and Walsall Road corridor. Say which stretch you are on.
Can you meet me at Peartree services?
Peartree, where the A34 meets the A44 and A40 north of Oxford, is the best place on the Oxfordshire section to wait for a mobile fitter. Park clear of the pumps and coach bays, let staff know you are waiting, and send us the bay.
Is there anywhere safe to stop on the A34 between Abingdon and Didcot?
Not on the carriageway. Between the Lodge Hill and Milton junctions the A34 is dual carriageway with no hard shoulder, so leave at Marcham for Abingdon, at Milton for Milton Park and Didcot, or at Chilton for the Harwell campus roads.
My tyre went on Stratford Road in Sparkhill, can you come to the street?
Usually. Stratford Road itself has bus lanes and loading bays we cannot block, so move into a residential side street in Sparkhill or Sparkbrook and we work there. Camp Hill, where the A34 crosses the Middleway, is the edge of the Birmingham Clean Air Zone.
I am on the Walsall Road near Perry Barr with a flat. Where do I go?
The One Stop shopping centre at Perry Barr sits beside the A34 with a large car park, far better than the Birchfield Road kerbside. Further north the retail car parks at the Scott Arms in Great Barr do the same job, with the site's permission.
Do you drive out from London for a puncture on the Oxford bypass?
We do; Oxford and the towns down the A34 are inside the area served from Brent Cross. The drive is long, so we ask for the tyre size, the exact location and whether the car can reach somewhere like Redbridge park and ride first.
What happens if I break down on the A34 and cannot reach a junction?
On the Oxfordshire trunk road, get out on the verge side, wait behind the barrier and call 999, then National Highways on 0300 123 5000. On the Birmingham streets, call 999 if you are blocking a lane. Recovery takes you off the road; we meet you there.
Are the Oxford park and ride sites a reasonable place to wait for you?
They are, especially Peartree, Water Eaton, Seacourt and Redbridge, which sit at the A34 interchanges. Park in a marked bay, pay for the stay so nobody argues, and the tyre is fitted or repaired there without holding anybody up.
Can you meet me at Redbridge park and ride if the tyre goes on the Oxford ring road?
Redbridge sits at the Hinksey Hill Interchange off the Abingdon Road and is the easiest A34 meeting point south of Oxford. Pay for the stay, park in an ordinary bay and tell us the row. Seacourt does the same at Botley.
On Stratford Road in Sparkhill, what will my tyre price depend on?
On the size from the sidewall, the brand you would like and the time of the call. Give us those from a side street off Stratford Road and the full figure is quoted before anything is booked. Camp Hill is the Clean Air Zone boundary.
