A screw in the tread from the Oxford bypass or the Stratford Road does not automatically mean a new tyre. Stop at Peartree or in a Hall Green side street and we measure it against BS AU 159.
Screws and nails shaken off vans and trailers end up along the Oxfordshire A34 as on any busy trunk road, and the gutters of Birmingham's Stratford Road collect their share of glass and metal. A puncture from either tends to be slow, the tyre softening over several miles. On the dual carriageway, avoid harsh braking and head for the next interchange if the car stays steady, since there is no hard shoulder to pull onto anywhere from Wendlebury to Chieveley.
With the car stopped, the fitter lifts the wheel away and studies the tyre from inside. Under BS AU 159 the damage may measure no more than 6 mm and must sit clear of both tread shoulders, and the fix is a combined patch and plug applied from within. Damage outside those limits, or a casing scorched by running soft, calls for a replacement. You are told which, along with the price, before any tool touches the wheel.

Peartree services at the A44 interchange, Seacourt park and ride off Botley Road and Redbridge park and ride near the Abingdon Road all work, as do quiet streets behind Stratford Road. The A34 carriageway and the M6 J7 roundabout do not.

Oxford drivers using the A34 often spot a slow puncture at the shops, and a bay at Botley Road Retail Park or Seacourt Retail Park, with the site's permission, is a sensible place for us to look at it, as is a street in West Oxford. Where the object pierced the centre band, a BS AU 159 repair happens there; anything near the edge needs a new tyre, priced first.
Until the fitter reaches you off the A34, drive no further on the soft tyre and keep any sealant can in the boot; the goo spreads inside and may make a patch-plug impossible. Next, look for what went in. A screw sitting mid-tread is a good sign, while one near the shoulder usually means a new tyre. Locate the wheel lock key now. Water Eaton park and ride by Peartree, or a Sparkbrook side street off Stoney Lane, are sensible places to be.
