Puncture Repair · M40

Puncture repaired safely off the carriageway
on the M40.

A puncture on the M40 is rarely the end of the tyre. A screw or nail in the tread usually meets the British Standard for repairs, BS AU 159, which means an internal patch that holds for the life of the tyre and costs a fraction of a new one. We come to you on this motorway and mend it where you have stopped.

Get to safety before anything else. Pull into an emergency area, onto the hard shoulder or off at the next junction, put your hazards on and stand well back from live traffic while you call. We make our way out to you along the M40, take the wheel off and inspect the tyre from the inside.

A roadside repair only counts if it meets BS AU 159: the hole in the central three-quarters of the tread, under 6mm, and no sign the tyre has been run flat. If your damage is outside those limits we tell you and fit a replacement instead, so you never leave on a patch that could let go.

  • Repaired to BS AU 159, an internal patch after we inspect inside the tyre, never an outside plug
  • A straight repair-or-replace answer, and we only mend what is genuinely safe
  • A qualifying repair costs far less than a new tyre, wheel rebalanced before you go
  • We reach you at the roadside on the M40, usually within the hour where we can get to you

About the M40

The road we cover.

The M40 links London and Birmingham across 89 miles and 16 junctions, climbing the Chilterns at the Stokenchurch gap. It passes Beaconsfield at junction 2, High Wycombe at 4, Oxford at 8, Bicester at 9, Banbury at 11 and Warwick and Leamington Spa at 12 to 15 before meeting the M42 near Solihull at junction 16. It is a fast inter-city motorway carrying London-to-Midlands business and commuter traffic, with long rural stretches between junctions.

Wherever you've pulled over along it, we come to you and repair the puncture at the roadside rather than have you limp on and ruin the tyre.

Stay safe first

Broken down on the M40?

A slow puncture usually gives you a little time. Reduce speed, put your hazards on and come off at the next exit or into an emergency area rather than stopping in a live lane.

Get off the carriageway

Reach an emergency area, the hard shoulder or the next exit if you safely can, and put your hazards on.

Stand behind the barrier

Leave the vehicle on the passenger side and wait well back. In a live lane, call 999 or National Highways on 0300 123 5000.

Call us

Once you are safe, call and we will come to you on the M40 to puncture repaired safely off the carriageway.

M40 FAQs

Puncture Repair on the M40, answered.

What actually happens during a roadside repair on the M40?
Once you are safe, we jack the car, take the wheel off and remove the tyre from the rim. We inspect the inside of the casing, fit a combined plug and patch to BS AU 159, rebalance the wheel and refit it. Then you are good to drive on from the M40.
Why do you take the whole tyre off just for a puncture?
Because a repair to BS AU 159 has to be done from the inside. Taking the tyre off the rim is the only way to inspect the casing for hidden damage and bond a patch properly. An outside plug fitted on the M40 without that is not a repair we would trust.
Can you repair a puncture in the dark or bad weather on the M40?
Yes. Our fitters work through the night and in poor weather, with lighting to do the job safely at the roadside on the M40. Getting you off a motorway and back on your way matters most when conditions are bad, so we run 24-hour callouts every day.
Does a repaired tyre need checking again later?
A repair to BS AU 159 lasts the working life of the tyre, so there is no special upkeep. Just keep an eye on your pressures as normal after we send you off from the M40, and have any future puncture inspected properly rather than plugged from outside.
What if my puncture cannot be repaired at the roadside?
Then we tell you straight and fit a replacement from the van where we have your size, so you are not left stranded on the M40. You only pay for what is needed, with nothing to settle up front, and we confirm the price with you before we set off whether we repair or replace.
