Absent a mobile fitter, a failed tyre near the M40 usually means a recovery truck, a garage in Oxford or Banbury that may not stock the right run-flat, and a lost day. Many executive cars carry no spare. On the rural stretches north of Banbury and around Stokenchurch, the nearest tyre garage may be a long way off, which is exactly where a travelling workshop earns its keep.
Loaded in the back are a tyre changer, a balancing rig, compressed air and calibrated torque tools, and run-flat sizes are collected before we head out along the A40. Beside the car: wheel off, old tyre stripped, new one seated, inflated and spun to balance, then the wheel refitted to the maker's torque. Send the markings and a location pin; the price is agreed on the phone.
Level ground beside the car is all the van asks for: a Beaconsfield services bay, a Banbury retail park via J11 or the Bicester Avenue car parks off J9. Never a hard shoulder or slip road.

The job needs a bay with a clear side next to the damaged wheel and a surface flat enough for the jack.
