Flat tyre in a Thame car park or at Oxford services? Leave it rather than driving onto the M40. A fitter comes to the car and judges if a plug will do or a new tyre is due.
M40 flats are often found after a pause: back at the car after an afternoon at Bicester Village, returning from a meeting in Oxford, or discovering that a slow leak has emptied a tyre overnight on a Princes Risborough drive. With a run-flat the car may feel drivable, but the warning still means stop. A conventional tyre that has sat empty will only be harmed further by even a short run towards the motorway.
Stay with the car and ring with the location, the sidewall markings and whether any locking wheel nuts are present. At the car, wheel off and tyre dismounted, the inside is examined. A small, clean hole mid-tread gets a BS AU 159 repair. A shoulder puncture, a crushed liner or a run-flat driven deflated means a replacement. Flat tyre heading into Leamington from J13 or J14? Keep the speed right down, follow the A452 and stop properly as soon as you can, for instance at Leamington Shopping Park, a side road off Princes Drive or a quiet street in Lillington. Hazards on, passengers out onto the pavement, then ring us. Look for the size on the sidewall and any obvious nail or cut before we speak.
Kneel by each wheel in turn at Bicester Avenue; one soft tyre sometimes has a partner going the same way. On the flat itself, search for a nail, a split valve stem and fresh kerb scuffing. Resist creeping to a garage in Bicester, even at walking pace, as the casing is crushed with every turn. A space-saver, where supplied, is a short-range, low-speed spare and no answer to the M40 home, so leave the car in its bay and ring.
