The A43 links the M40 at junction 10, where Cherwell Valley services sits on the roundabout, with the M1 at junction 15a and the A14 at Kettering. It bypasses Brackley, passes Silverstone circuit, meets the A5 at Towcester and crosses the east of Northampton before running through Moulton to Kettering. It carries commuters, Silverstone traffic on event weekends and lorries avoiding the M1. The Northampton and Kettering lengths have roundabouts and retail parks that beat the lay-bys further south.

Before anything else
Get off the live carriageway
If you can still control the car safely, leave at the next junction or pull into a services. If not, use the hard shoulder or an emergency area rather than a running lane, but never as a place to wait for a fitter: nobody can change a wheel there.
If you cannot move
Put your hazards on. If it is safe, get everyone out on the passenger side and behind the barrier; if not, stay in with seatbelts on. Call 999 if you are in a live lane or in danger. Otherwise call the road operator (details below) and get moved to a place of safety. On a smart motorway use an emergency area and the orange SOS phone, and do not rejoin until the signals are set.

Puncture repair once you are off the A43
The A43's single and dual sections mean hedges close to the road and farm mud on the Brackley and Silverstone lengths, where flints and thorns find their way into tread. A slow puncture noticed at Baynards Green is best driven gently to Cherwell Valley; one at Towcester goes into the town car parks. A central hole within 6 mm is repaired.

A tyre letting go at speed on the dual carriageway south of Brackley leaves you steering for a slip road with only a verge and a hedge to the left. Ease off, hold your line and take the Brackley or Baynards Green exit, or Cherwell Valley near the M40. Once parked at Brackley we fit the replacement and look at the rim.

After dark the A43 is quiet and unlit between the towns, and the temptation is to keep driving on a flat to reach Northampton or the M40. Better to stop at the first safe place: Cherwell Valley is open all night, and Towcester, Brackley and the Kettering exits have car parks close to the road. We reach all of them.

A tyre bursts in the slow-moving queue for the circuit on an event weekend. Steer for the Dadford Road turn and into the circuit's public car parks. Tell us the car park and gate.
Towcester Tove roundabout, locking wheel nut key rounded
Round the Tove roundabout the pressure light comes on, and the spare would go on if the locking key had not rounded off. Take the Towcester exit and park off Watling Street; we draw the nut off.

Is Cherwell Valley services on the A43 or the M40?
Cherwell Valley sits on the roundabout at M40 junction 10, so it is reachable from both roads and the obvious stopping point for a tyre problem on the southern A43. Park well away from the lorry area and send us the row you are in.
Can you meet me at Silverstone on a race weekend?
We can, but be realistic about the traffic. The A43 around Silverstone becomes a queue on event days and the circuit's own car parks are the only sensible place to wait. Tell us which car park and gate; our arrival reflects the congestion everybody else is in.
Which A43 towns do you cover from London?
There is no hard shoulder near Brackley. Where do I go with a flat?
Take the A422 exit into Brackley. The town centre car parks around Market Place and the supermarket car park by the bypass, where the operator allows it, are both close to the A43 and give a fitter room to work. Do not stop on the slip roads.
I am on the A43 in Northampton near Round Spinney. Is that safe to stop?
The urban A43 through Northampton is a busy dual carriageway with roundabouts and no verge parking, so use the Moulton Park estate roads or the retail units at Round Spinney. Further south, Sixfields off the A45 has large car parks.
What if I cannot get the car off the A43 at all?
Get everyone out on the verge side away from the traffic, then call 999 and National Highways on 0300 123 5000. They can close a lane and arrange recovery to a safe place, where we meet you. Nobody should change a wheel in a live A43 lane.
Does the A43 to Kettering join the A14?
It meets the A14 at junction 7 on the western edge of Kettering and continues north towards Corby and Stamford. If your tyre goes near that junction, head into Kettering rather than onto the A14, which has no hard shoulder either.
Do you fit tyres at Cherwell Valley services for A43 drivers?
Cherwell Valley is a sensible place to end up from the A43, on the M40 J10 roundabout and open all night. Use the car park, not the HGV or coach areas, let the Moto desk know a fitter is due, then photograph the sidewall for us.
I am on the A43 in Northampton near Round Spinney with a flat, what should I do?
Keep the car rolling to the next roundabout and turn into the Moulton Park estate roads or the retail units at Round Spinney, where a van can pull up. The urban A43 has no verge parking, so stopping on it blocks a lane.
