The A14 from Catthorpe to Thrapston has no hard shoulder, so with a flat, leave at the next exit, a Kettering junction or a village turning, only if you can still control the car. If not, stop as far left as is safe, hazards on, dial 999 and National Highways on 0300 123 5000, get recovered somewhere safe and phone us from there.
The A14 leaves the Catthorpe Interchange, where the M1 and M6 meet, and runs east past Rothwell and Kettering to Thrapston and the East Coast ports. Felixstowe freight shares two lanes each way with Northamptonshire commuters, and dropped strapping and lorry tyre carcasses litter the nearside lane. Built as an all-purpose road, it has no hard shoulder, only lay-bys and junction slip roads. The Kettering exits, with Kettering Venture Park and the A509 retail parks, and the village turnings around Thrapston give a fitter room.
If you can still control the car safely, leave at the next junction or pull into a services. If not, use the hard shoulder or an emergency area rather than a running lane, but never as a place to wait for a fitter: nobody can change a wheel there.
Put your hazards on. If it is safe, get everyone out on the passenger side and behind the barrier; if not, stay in with seatbelts on. Call 999 if you are in a live lane or in danger. Otherwise call the road operator (details below) and get moved to a place of safety. On a smart motorway use an emergency area and the orange SOS phone, and do not rejoin until the signals are set.

Between Catthorpe and Thrapston the A14 gives you no hard shoulder, so our part starts in a Kettering car park or a Rothwell or Thrapston street.
On the A14 the puncture risk is what lorries drop: a pallet screw, truck tread, a bolt on the Catthorpe slips. Drive a slow leak only as far as the next exit, then find a Kettering or Thrapston car park away from the HGVs. Under 6 mm and in the tread's middle band, the hole gets an internal patch-plug at Kettering.
How a mobile puncture repair is done →A tyre that lets go at 70 on the A14 pulls the car towards the verge. Hold the wheel and ease off without hard braking; still in control, take the next exit, otherwise stop well left and dial 999. Parked in a Rothwell turning or a Kettering retail estate, ring with the sidewall size; we fit it there and check the rim.
What to do after a burst tyre →A locking nut that will not shift is worse on the A14 than in town, because nobody can sit on the verge with lorries passing while the key is hunted for. Reach Kettering Venture Park, a Thrapston side road or Kelmarsh village off the A508 first. We remove the nut without harming the wheel and can fit standard nuts.

Eastbound past Rothwell a dropped ratchet strap catches the offside rear and the steering shudders. Take J9 for the A509 into Kettering Venture Park. We cut the strap free, find the hidden puncture and sort the tyre.
Joining from the M6 at Catthorpe you run over lorry tread and the pressure light comes on. Nobody stops at the interchange; take the A5 exit to a village street towards Lutterworth. A shoulder cut needs replacing.
A tyre losing air since Kettering sets the warning off near Thrapston. Leave at J13 and park on the high street, not the slip road. A nail in the tread's middle band, under 6 mm, gets plugged.
