Slow leaks are the A14's quiet speciality. Screws, nails and shards dropped from trailers gather in the nearside lane between J7 and J10, and a tyre that collects one may lose pressure over a day rather than all at once. The warning light often comes on around the A43 turn for Corby or as you slow for the Thrapston roundabouts. With no hard shoulder anywhere on this road, roll gently on to the next exit if it steers true, not stopping in lane.
Once the car is parked, the fitter removes the tyre and checks the damage against BS AU 159. A hole of up to 6 mm that keeps away from the outermost eighth of the tread either side qualifies; it is plugged, patched internally, and the wheel is then balanced and bolted back. A slow puncture picked up on the A14 often shows itself a day later, with the car parked at Junction One Retail Park in Rugby, outside a unit on Glebe Farm Industrial Estate or on a drive in Hillmorton Paddox. Once the car is off the A14 and parked, touch nothing on that wheel. Aerosol sealant pumped in through the valve smears the inner liner, and that residue can spoil a BS AU 159 repair. Walk round with a torch and look for the screw head: dead centre in the tread is promising, right by the shoulder is not. Retrieve the locking wheel key too, and wait in a Barton Seagrave side street off J10 rather than beside the A6 traffic.
