Freight lanes on the M1 shed bolts, wheel weights and screws. Caught early and lodged in the middle of the tread, that kind of hole is usually repairable at the next car park.
Many M1 punctures begin in lane one, among the haulage traffic running to Crick and the Luton warehouses, and reveal themselves as a dashboard warning somewhere on the smart stretch past J6a. From then on every mile on a softening tyre counts. The sidewall flexes further than it was built to, heat builds, and the inner liner starts to shred. A screw that could have been sealed near J8 can mean a scrapped tyre by J11.
At the parked car the tyre is lifted off its rim and inspected from the inside, since liner damage never shows on the outside. To qualify under BS AU 159 the hole may be no more than 6 mm across and stay clear of the outer eighth of tread on either edge; it is then sealed with a patch-plug from within. Shoulder punctures, sidewall wounds or a liner scuffed from running flat all mean a new tyre. Both prices are given before we leave.

A slow puncture picked up on the M1 may only show the next morning. If the soft tyre is outside a house in Adeyfield, or in a bay on Maylands Avenue near J8, leave the car there and send a photo of the tread. Damage within the central part of the tread, and no larger than BS AU 159 permits, is repaired there and the pressure reset.
Waiting in the Toddington car park, or on a quiet Redbourn road off J9, keep the car off that tyre entirely. The aerosol in many boots fills the liner with gunge that has to be scraped out and can spoil a patch. Crouch and locate the offending nail; one sitting in the central band is promising, one close to the tread edge far less so, and a picture helps us. Find the locking wheel nut key too, often tucked under the boot floor.
