The M6 Toll loops around the north of Birmingham from the M42 near Coleshill to the M6 above Cannock, past Spaghetti Junction. It is a private motorway run by Midland Expressway, paid for at the Weeford and Great Wyrley plazas, and the toll is yours. Lightly used, it feels isolated after dark around Lichfield. The one services is Norton Canes between T6 and T7, and junctions T1 to T8 drop onto the A5, A38 or A446 close to Sutton Coldfield, Lichfield, Tamworth and Cannock.

Before anything else
Get off the live carriageway
If you can still control the car safely, leave at the next junction or pull into a services. If not, use the hard shoulder or an emergency area rather than a running lane, but never as a place to wait for a fitter: nobody can change a wheel there.
If you cannot move
Put your hazards on. If it is safe, get everyone out on the passenger side and behind the barrier; if not, stay in with seatbelts on. Call 999 if you are in a live lane or in danger. Otherwise call the road operator (details below) and get moved to a place of safety. On a smart motorway use an emergency area and the orange SOS phone, and do not rejoin until the signals are set.

Parked at Norton Canes, in Lichfield via T3 or T4, or in Cannock via T7, we fit new tyres, repair punctures and shift stuck locking nuts.
Puncture repair once you are off the M6 Toll
The toll road's smooth surface hides a slow puncture, so drivers often only notice at the Weeford or Great Wyrley plaza when the car sits down on one corner. Pay, move on to Norton Canes or the next T junction. A hole no bigger than 6 mm in the central tread, casing intact, is repaired from the inside to BS AU 159.

A blowout on the Lichfield section of the M6 Toll can leave you on a carriageway with no other cars in sight. Steer straight and if the car still rolls aim for T3, T4 or T6. If not, get behind the barrier and use the roadside phone, which goes to the toll road's own control room for recovery.

At night the M6 Toll is one of the emptiest motorways in England, pleasant until a tyre fails. Norton Canes is open through the night and is the place to wait. Someone answers our phone at every hour and we drive up from London; leaving via a T junction still means paying the exit toll.

Weeford toll plaza: the car sits low in the queue
The rear corner has dropped as you edge towards the Weeford booths. Pay, do not stop at the plaza, and take the next T junction signed for Lichfield. Park in a city car park.
Norton Canes services: blowout on the empty northbound carriageway
Nobody is around when the front tyre bursts between T6 and T7 after dark. Hold straight, ease off; if it tracks true, go on to Norton Canes, otherwise hard shoulder and behind the barrier.
T7 Cannock: locking nut key nowhere in the hire car
The hire car has a flat, the paperwork promises a spare, and no locking key turns up. Leave at T7 for the A5 and stop in a Cannock retail park; the nut comes off cleanly.

Who do I call if I break down on the M6 Toll?
Not National Highways, because they do not run this road. Use the orange emergency phones on the M6 Toll, which connect to Midland Expressway's control room, or dial 999 in a live lane. Their patrols get the car recovered. Then phone us.
Can you meet me at Norton Canes services?
Norton Canes is between T6 and T7 and serves both directions from a single site, so it is the easiest meeting point on the toll road. Park in the car park rather than the fuel or coach areas and send your registration and the tyre size.
Will you pay or refund the toll to reach me?
No. The toll is charged by Midland Expressway to the driver and is not part of what we do. If we use the toll road to reach you, that is our business; if you leave at a T junction, the exit charge is yours.
Is it all right to change a wheel at the Weeford toll plaza?
No. The plazas are for paying and moving on, not safe places to stop and lift a car, and staff will ask you to move. Pay, then carry on to T3 for Lichfield and Sutton Coldfield, or to Norton Canes, and stop in a car park.
I am stopped on the M6 Toll hard shoulder near Lichfield. Will you come to me?
Not on the hard shoulder. Get out on the left, go behind the barrier and use the emergency phone or call 999. Midland Expressway will arrange recovery into Lichfield or to Norton Canes, and we set off once you confirm where the car is going.
How long will it take you to reach the M6 Toll from Brent Cross?
A drive of two hours or more off peak to the southern junctions near Coleshill and Sutton Coldfield, and nearer three to Cannock at the northern end. We have one base in north west London and no van in Staffordshire, so plan around that.
Which junction gets me to Lichfield fastest with a soft tyre?
T3 for the A38, T4 for the A5 at Wall or T5 for the A5148 all lead into Lichfield, though T5 does not have every movement so watch the signs. Pick whichever comes first, head for a city centre car park and give us the postcode.
Could you fit a tyre the same day in Lichfield after an M6 Toll puncture?
Possibly, though Lichfield is a long way from Brent Cross and we would rather say so than promise the impossible. Park in a city centre car park off the A38 or A5148, send the sidewall size, and we say whether the tyre is on the van.
How is the cost worked out for a callout to Norton Canes or Cannock?
The tyre, its size and the mileage from London up to Staffordshire make up the quote, agreed before we leave NW2. The toll itself is a matter between you and Midland Expressway; it never appears on our bill and we cannot refund an exit charge.
