The first five junctions of the M5 skirt the Black Country, from the M6 split at Ray Hall past West Bromwich, Oldbury, Quinton and Halesowen, then over the Lickey ridge to Bromsgrove and Droitwich. Holiday traffic and port lorries keep it busy at all hours, and the elevated section around Oldbury is tight, with concrete barriers close on both sides. Frankley between J3 and J4 is the only services. From J4a, where the M42 joins, it is all-lane running with emergency areas.

Before anything else
Get off the live carriageway
If you can still control the car safely, leave at the next junction or pull into a services. If not, use the hard shoulder or an emergency area rather than a running lane, but never as a place to wait for a fitter: nobody can change a wheel there.
If you cannot move
Put your hazards on. If it is safe, get everyone out on the passenger side and behind the barrier; if not, stay in with seatbelts on. Call 999 if you are in a live lane or in danger. Otherwise call the road operator (details below) and get moved to a place of safety. On a smart motorway use an emergency area and the orange SOS phone, and do not rejoin until the signals are set.

On the Black Country M5 a new tyre, a repair or a seized locking nut is sorted at Frankley, in Oldbury or Halesowen, or at Longbridge.
Puncture repair once you are off the M5
Scrap traffic on and off at J1 and J2 leaves debris on the Black Country M5, a reliable source of punctures. If the light comes on around Oldbury, come off at J2 or J3 and park in Quinton or Halesowen. A hole in the central tread under 6 mm on a tyre not run flat gets a patch-plug to BS AU 159.

A blowout on the elevated J1 to J2 section is as bad as it gets, with close barriers and narrow lanes. Reach J2 or J3 only while the car steers true. If not, use an emergency area and SOS phone south of J4a; on the viaduct pull left, hazards on, stay belted in and dial 999; elsewhere, behind the barrier.

Frankley services is where an M5 driver may find the locking nut key missing, usually with the spare already out of the boot. Freight and early holiday departures mean the M5 through the Black Country is never quiet, even at three in the morning. A tyre that fails overnight leaves few options, since the tyre centres in Oldbury and Halesowen will not open for hours. J2 Oldbury: pressure warning on the elevated section
Scrap traffic off Birchley Island has left something sharp on the carriageway and the warning light comes on as the viaduct narrows. Keep steady to J2, drop onto the A4123 and park on an Oldbury trading estate.
Frankley services southbound: rear tyre gone on the Lickey climb
Heavy holiday load, a tyre already low, and the pull south of J3 finishes it. The car still steers, so take the Frankley slip rather than stopping on the main line. Say which carriageway.
J4 Longbridge: locking nut key gone on a night shift
You come off at J4 with a soft tyre, reach the Longbridge station car park and discover the locking key never came with the car. The car park is level; proper sockets free the nut.

Questions drivers on the M5 ask.
Where on the M5 in the Midlands is there no hard shoulder?
From J4a, where the M42 merges, southwards past J5 at Wychbold and on towards Worcester the motorway runs all lanes. The only refuges are the orange emergency areas. Stopped in one, lift the SOS phone and stay behind the barrier until a red X closes the lane.
Can you come to Frankley services?
On either carriageway. Frankley sits between J3 and J4 with the two sides joined by a footbridge but not by road, so say whether you are northbound towards Birmingham or southbound towards Bromsgrove. Use the main car park, well clear of the pumps, and send your registration.
I have a flat on the Oldbury viaduct. What do I do?
Do not stop there unless forced; the J1 to J2 viaduct is narrow. If the car still steers, leave at J2 for Oldbury or J1 for West Bromwich. If not, pull left with hazards on; with nowhere safe to stand, stay belted in and dial 999.
How far is the M5 from your London base?
A long way. West Bromwich at J1 is well over two hours off peak from Brent Cross, usually up the M40 and M42 and onto the M5 at J4a, with Bromsgrove and Droitwich slightly nearer. We only have the one base, so those are the honest figures.
Is there anywhere to stop at J4a?
Nowhere. J4a is the motorway-to-motorway junction with the M42 and has no car parks or side roads. If your tyre is going down near it, carry on to J4 for Rubery and Longbridge or J5 for Wychbold, or follow the M42 to Hopwood Park at its J2.
Will you fit a tyre at Longbridge or Rubery if I come off at J4?
The Longbridge town centre car parks and the streets around Rubery are close to the junction and easy to work in, and Longbridge station car park, if the operator agrees, is another option late at night. Give us the postcode and we meet you there.
Does the Birmingham Clean Air Zone affect me if I leave the M5 at J1 or J3?
Not immediately. The zone is the city centre inside the A4540 ring road, several miles east of the motorway. West Bromwich, Oldbury, Quinton and Halesowen are all outside it, so you can stop in any of them without a charge.
I work in West Bromwich. Can the tyre be done in the staff car park instead of at the M5?
A staff car park on the A41 Birmingham Road side of West Bromwich suits us better than any junction. Check that a van can come in, give us the company name and entrance, and the fitter works by the car while you carry on with the shift.
How is the price worked out for the M5 at Frankley or Halesowen?
The tyre you choose, its size, and the run from London up to Frankley or Halesowen go into one figure, agreed over the phone before anything happens. The distance from NW2 to the Black Country is part of it, since there is no Midlands van.
