A screw collected on the M5 near Oldbury need not call for a new tyre. Park up off the motorway and we repair it to BS AU 159 wherever the car stands.
Scrap lorries working the yards near J1 and J2 shed bolts and metal offcuts, and the elevated section above Oldbury gives that debris nowhere to go but the lanes. The result is a slow leak flagged on the dashboard somewhere around Birchley Island. Kept to a gentle pace and taken off at the next junction, that tyre usually stays repairable; driven soft all the way to Droitwich, the sidewall breaks down and it does not.
With the car parked, we lever the tyre away from the wheel and look inside the casing. A hole in the permitted central band of tread, 6 mm or narrower, with the inner lining unharmed, is sealed using a combined patch and plug. Outside those limits the honest answer is a replacement, and you hear which before we start. Have the locking key handy and tell us where the object sits across the tread.
