When a tyre bursts on the M5 around Halesowen or the Lickey climb, stopping safely off the carriageway comes first. The replacement tyre is our part after that.
The pull south from J3 towards the Lickey ridge is where a heavily laden holiday car can finally lose an under-inflated tyre. There is a bang, the car tugs to one side and the steering goes vague. Hold the wheel firmly, keep your foot away from the brake for a moment, allow the car to slow on its own and signal left. If it still tracks, Frankley services is the nearest place to stop; beyond J4a there is no hard shoulder at all.
A car that will not move goes to recovery first: climb behind the barrier if that can be done safely, then ring 999 if the car is stuck in a running lane, or National Highways on 0300 123 5000. Once you are parked, send a photo of the other tyre on that axle and of the rim. We bring a matching replacement, check the wheel for cracks or a flattened lip, and look over the partner tyre, since a blowout often overheats it too.

Lose a tyre near J2 of the M5 and the first job is getting off the motorway into Oldbury. Birchfield Lane, the A4034, leads towards side roads in Causeway Green and the car parks around Oldbury Green Retail Park. Drive slowly and stop as soon as it is legal. Then call with the road name, the number on the road sign and the closest shop you can see.
Once the tyre bangs on the M5, hold a straight line and hit the hazards. Beyond J4a there is no hard shoulder; if the car still steers, make for the exit or the next orange emergency area. Stranded in a lane or on the narrow Oldbury viaduct with no safe way out? Stay belted in and dial 999. Otherwise leave by the nearside and wait behind the barrier, never walking along the road. A rim driven on is wrecked, so wheel and tyres are checked after recovery.
