My tyre burst while I was driving on the M69. What should I do first?
Stay calm and keep both hands on the wheel. Lift off the accelerator smoothly rather than braking hard, because heavy braking after a blowout can pull the car sharply out of line. Let the speed bleed away naturally, then steer gently towards the hard shoulder or the nearest emergency refuge area. Switch on your hazard lights, get out on the side away from traffic if it is safe, and stand behind the barrier. Once you are clear of the live lanes, call us and we will come to you.
Can a burst tyre be repaired, or does it need replacing?
A genuine blowout almost always needs a new tyre. When a tyre bursts at speed the sidewall flexes violently and the internal casing tears, and that kind of damage cannot be patched safely. A puncture in the tread can sometimes be repaired, but a burst is different. When we reach you on the M69 we will look at the tyre, tell you honestly what we see, and fit a replacement so you can get moving again.
Do you fit the new tyre on the motorway itself, or do I need a tow?
