Nobody from Rescue Tyres will kneel by your wheel on the M69 hard shoulder, nor should you. If the tyre still turns, leave at Hinckley, Coventry or Fosse Park and park up. If it will not, ring 999 or National Highways on 0300 123 5000 first: recovery gets you off the motorway, then we do the tyre where the car lands.
The M69 is a sixteen-mile link between the M6 at Coventry and the M1 at Leicester, passing Hinckley. It carries Coventry commuters to Fosse Park and lorries cutting the corner between the bigger motorways. There are two numbered junctions, J1 for the A5 at Hinckley and J2 for Burbage and Sapcote, plus the interchanges at either end, and no services. Leicester Forest East just north of M1 J21 and the University Hospital at Walsgrave near M6 J2 are the nearest big stopping places.
If you can still control the car safely, leave at the next junction or pull into a services. If not, use the hard shoulder or an emergency area rather than a running lane, but never as a place to wait for a fitter: nobody can change a wheel there.
Put your hazards on. If it is safe, get everyone out on the passenger side and behind the barrier; if not, stay in with seatbelts on. Call 999 if you are in a live lane or in danger. Otherwise call the road operator (details below) and get moved to a place of safety. On a smart motorway use an emergency area and the orange SOS phone, and do not rejoin until the signals are set.

Hinckley's industrial estates and the building sites around Burbage shed screws, and the M69 is where the slow puncture shows itself. If the tyre is not obviously flat, drive gently to J1 or J2. We examine the inside, because a tyre run soft hides damage. A small central hole gets a BS AU 159 patch-plug.

What to do after a burst tyre →If the locking nut key has gone missing, the first hint is often at Leicester Forest East or Fosse Park when someone tries to fit the spare and cannot. We remove locking nuts from any make, including spinning-collar types, without gouging the alloy. Come off at either end or at Hinckley, park somewhere flat, and we hand over ordinary nuts afterwards.
How locking wheel nuts are removed →Shift changes at the distribution centres around Fosse Park, Magna Park and Ansty mean the M69 carries traffic when most of Leicestershire is asleep. A flat at half past three is not a reason to wait for the tyre shops. Get the car to Leicester Forest East, Fosse Park or Hinckley and we drive up from London.

A screw picked up on a Hinckley estate finally lets the air out at motorway speed heading for Leicester. If the tyre still holds pressure, take J1 onto the A5 and park at a Hinckley retail park.
The rear tyre goes with the M1 interchange in sight. Steer straight, let the speed drop and follow the signs into Fosse Park retail park rather than stopping on the M69. Name the store you park near.
You come off the M69 at the Coventry end with a puncture, stop on the Ansty Park business roads and find the locking key is missing. Leave the nut alone; dedicated tools get it off.
