A screw spotted at midnight after the drive home along the M69 does not have to mean a new tyre. It can be patched through the night so the car is fit for the early drive.
Picture a late evening: a commuter parks on the drive in Burbage or Sapcote after the M69, hears a hiss, and finds a screw head in the tread. The car is needed for the early run back to Coventry, and the local garages will not open for hours. What is wanted then is a repair, not a new tyre, finished before the alarm goes off at six.
Leave the screw in place, since pulling it out lets the rest of the air go, and send us a photo and the size. Overnight we remove the tyre, check the inner lining and, if the hole is within the central tread and no wider than 6 mm, fit a patch-plug to BS AU 159. You hear the price before anyone leaves London, and the night adds nothing.
