A screw from a building site skip on Kilburn High Road or a nail collected on the grade-separated MK stretch usually leaves a hole the A5 fitter can patch from inside, sparing the tyre.
Two sorts of hazard meet on the A5. In Kilburn, Cricklewood and West Hendon, builders' vans and skips leave nails and screws in the gutter, and cabs pulling into bus stops pick them up. North of M1 junction 9, trunk-road debris collects on the Dunstable, Hockliffe and Fenny Stratford lengths. Potholes rarely cause a repairable puncture, since they pinch sidewalls instead, but a clean nail in the tread is exactly what a proper repair was made for.
Parked up in a Cricklewood side road or a Bletchley retail park, the fitter demounts the tyre to follow the Cricklewood nail or Hockliffe screw inside. Where that hole stays within 6 mm and inside the central three-quarters, a BS AU 159 patch-plug closes it and the wheel goes back on the balancer. Puncture found after shopping? Brent Cross Shopping Park, Borehamwood Shopping Park and Silk Bridge Retail Park are all places just off the A5 where drivers notice a soft tyre. The car stays in its bay while we check the tread and sidewall, and the repair is carried out to BS AU 159 when the damage allows it.
Pulled into a Kilburn side street or Dunstable's Quadrant with a nail in the tread, stay parked and keep the sealant can in the boot, since the foam gets in the way of a proper patch. Look at where the nail sits: in the middle band it may be repairable, near the edge it probably is not. Leave it in. Dig out the locking key. Kilburn's residents' bays only suit if you are legally parked there, and the Broadway kerb never does.
