The workshop comes to the A5.

A damaged tyre on the A5 is awkward to take anywhere. Garages near Edgware Road have little room and the red route stops cars waiting outside; a space-saver on Watling Street means crawling at limited speed among lorries between Weedon and Kilsby. A tow costs time. For a Burnt Oak family, a Milton Keynes commuter or a Tamworth shopper at Ventura, a van that brings its equipment to them is the simpler answer.

The van carries its own workshop: tyre changing machine, electronic balancer, jacks, torque wrench and stocked tyres in common sizes. In a side street or car park the wheel is taken off, the tyre swapped, the wheel balanced on board and refitted to the correct torque, all without the car moving. Give the size and describe the parking spot, and you know the full cost before anyone loads up at Staples Corner.

The space the job needs

In a tight Kilburn or Cricklewood street, the question is whether the van can sit beside the car without closing the road. Level ground helps; a steep camber does not. Residents' bays are fine if the car is legal, and private car parks at Colindale need the owner's agreement. Nobody's drive should be blocked. On Watling Street, Central Milton Keynes car parks give generous room. The point of the equipment on board is that the car stays exactly where it is.
