The A5 is a pothole road, so bulges and sidewall splits found the morning after, outside a Burnt Oak house or on a Hinckley drive, are a real risk; we judge them honestly and replace them there.
Potholes are the big hazard. A wheel dropping into a patched hole on Kilburn High Road, a bus-stop kerb clipped on Cricklewood Broadway, or a pothole taken at trunk-road speed near the Weedon crossroads can each crush the sidewall against the rim. The tyre may hold air for days, then a bubble appears on the inside wall or a crack opens along the shoulder. Drivers usually find it while parked, washing the car in Edgware or loading it at Atherstone.
Snap the Burnt Oak or Hinckley sidewall with its size code readable and send it; that gets an answer soonest. Where a pothole has pinched the tyre into a bulge, or cord shows through a split, the advice is to keep the car off the road; that tyre has lost its strength. Further north the A5 becomes Watling Street. A tyre that breaks up near Brownhills can be replaced in Clayhanger, Chasetown or at Watling Street Business Park, once the car has been moved away from the main road. Simply read the size printed on the sidewall and send it to us along with a photo of the damage.
The verdict on a pothole-hit tyre is rarely a guess. Stand by the parked car in Edgware or Hinckley and look: a swelling in the wall means broken cords, and so does a split that opens when pressed or cord glinting through a cut. Flat patches, or tread worn beyond the 1.6 mm legal line, are further reasons to stop. A tyre like that on the trunk road past Kilsby, among lorries, can come apart. Kilburn and Weedon potholes are the main hazards.
