In central London the A5 runs as Edgware Road down to Marble Arch. At night, pick a lit side street near Marble Arch station, Edgware Road station or Kilburn station and wait only where it is legal to do so. Red routes and bus lanes are no place to sit with a flat, so move off them first.
Phoning at 2 am from the A5, name the spot precisely: the side street off Kilburn High Road, the Staples Corner retail park, the Quadrant in Dunstable. Next comes the tyre size, then whether a locking key is aboard. Locked inside is fine in a car park away from moving traffic; on a busy street, get onto the pavement. Waiting in a dark Watling Street lay-by is the thing to avoid. On that call the price is put in plain terms, with nothing added for the hour.
