A tyre goes on the M11 and the instinct is to phone a fitter from the hard shoulder. Not us: we never work on the shoulder or in an emergency area. If the car steers, leave at the nearest exit or Birchanger Green at J8; if not, hard shoulder, all out behind the barrier, and 0300 123 5000 or 999, then ring us once recovered.

The M11 leaves the North Circular at Redbridge and runs through Epping Forest to Harlow and Stansted, carrying airport runs, Essex commuters and A14 lorries. It keeps a hard shoulder throughout, but that is not an invitation to change a wheel on it. With no services before Birchanger Green at J8, the exits are the refuges: Woodford at J4, Loughton at J5, Harlow at J7 and J7a. A slow leak usually reaches one; a tyre that has let go needs recovery.

Before anything else
Get off the live carriageway
If you can still control the car safely, leave at the next junction or pull into a services. If not, use the hard shoulder or an emergency area rather than a running lane, but never as a place to wait for a fitter: nobody can change a wheel there.
If you cannot move
Put your hazards on. If it is safe, get everyone out on the passenger side and behind the barrier; if not, stay in with seatbelts on. Call 999 if you are in a live lane or in danger. Otherwise call the road operator (details below) and get moved to a place of safety. On a smart motorway use an emergency area and the orange SOS phone, and do not rejoin until the signals are set.

On the M11 we replace or repair a tyre wherever the car rests off the carriageway: Birchanger Green, the Stansted long-stay or a Harlow business park.
Puncture repair once you are off the M11
A nail from an Essex lane often shows itself at motorway speed, when the pressure warning lights up between Loughton and Harlow. With air still in the tyre, come down the slip at J5, J7 or J7a and park. A clean hole in the central tread, up to 6 mm, gets a BS AU 159 patch-plug; driven flat, it is replaced.

A blowout northbound through Epping Forest pulls the car towards the side that has gone. Grip the wheel, let speed bleed off without braking sharply, and reach the next exit or Birchanger Green only while it steers. Stranded on the shoulder, get everyone over the barrier and ask National Highways (0300 123 5000) for recovery, or 999 if traffic is close.

The locking nut key can turn out to be missing only when a tyre fails on the way to Stansted: spare out, jack ready, key in a kitchen drawer. At the airport car parks, Birchanger Green or a Harlow car park, where the operator allows it, we remove the nut without damaging the wheel, fit the spare and supply replacement nuts.

The M11 never sleeps because of the airport: four in the morning departures, tired arrivals heading home after midnight. J4 Redbridge: pressure warning heading north to Stansted
The tyre light comes on as you join from the North Circular, flight to catch. Take Loughton at J5, roll into the Debden station car park and send the row. A small central hole is patch-plugged.
J7 Harlow: a bang from the rear tyre southbound
A rear tyre lets go southbound just before J7. Grip the wheel, ease off rather than braking, and if the car still tracks straight take the A414 slip and park on the Harlow business park roads.
Birchanger Green services at J8: spare out, key missing
You pulled into Birchanger Green off the Stansted roundabout, got the spare out and found the locking key was left in Bishop's Stortford. Stay clear of the pumps; the nut is drawn off with the alloy untouched.

Questions drivers on the M11 ask.
Are there any services on the M11 between London and Stansted?
None. Between the North Circular at J4 and the Stansted roundabout at J8 there are no services on either carriageway. Birchanger Green at J8 is the first, reached from the junction roundabout. Going down south of Harlow, leave at J5, J7 or J7a.
Can you fit a tyre at Stansted Airport car parks?
The long-stay and mid-stay areas are firm and off the public road, which is exactly what we need. Tell us the zone and row and whether the car sits on a slope. From the short-stay or drop-off roads, move into a proper bay first.
I have a flat on the M11 hard shoulder near Epping. Will you come to me there?
Not on the hard shoulder. A fitter kneeling by a wheel with traffic passing at 70 mph is what the Highway Code tells you to avoid. Get out on the passenger side, go behind the barrier and ring National Highways, 0300 123 5000, or 999.
The M11 has a hard shoulder all the way, so why do you still refuse to work on it?
Because a hard shoulder is a refuge for stopping, not a workshop. Vehicles drift onto it, lorries pass within arm's reach and a jacked-up car is unstable. National Highways advises waiting behind the barrier, not changing a wheel, and we hold our fitters to that.
Which junction should I aim for if my tyre is losing pressure northbound from Redbridge?
J5 for Loughton is the first exit, though it only has a northbound off-slip. Then it is J7 for Harlow and Epping and J7a for Harlow east. Southbound the order is J7a, J7, the M25 at J6, then J4 for Woodford.
How far is Brent Cross from the northern end of the M11?
The Stansted roundabout at J8 is the far end of our M11 cover, out along the North Circular and up the whole motorway; Harlow at J7 is nearer. We give a realistic arrival time on the call, counted from when the car is somewhere we can work.
Can you meet me at Birchanger Green services?
That works well. Park in the main car park, clear of the forecourt and lorry bays, and send your registration and a photo of the damaged tyre. Birchanger Green is open around the clock, so it suits overnight callouts around Bishop's Stortford and the airport.
Coming off the M11 at Harlow or Stansted, how is the tyre priced?
The tyre you pick, its size, and the distance from Brent Cross to wherever the car sits, so Debden station comes out differently from the Stansted long-stay. Read the sidewall, name the car park, and the whole figure is quoted before the van leaves Adrian Avenue.
Will you come out overnight to Loughton or Debden if my tyre goes on the M11 late?
A late call from the M11 is workable once the car is off the motorway. Loughton and Debden station car parks by J5 are level, and the supermarket car parks on the A406 at Redbridge, with permission, suit a driver who turned back at J4.
