What are the first seconds after a blowout on the M11 supposed to look like?
Hold the wheel firmly with both hands and take your foot off the accelerator so the car slows itself. Do not brake hard and do not swerve, because either can send you out of control at motorway speed. Let the pace fall, steer smoothly onto the hard shoulder or an emergency refuge area, and switch on your hazards. Leave the car on the side away from traffic if you can and wait behind the barrier, then call us.
Why can't you just repair the burst tyre?
Because a burst is not a puncture. At speed the blowout tears the sidewall and rips the internal casing, and no patch can make that sound again. A repair would fail, possibly at speed. That is why we come to the M11 with a replacement and fit it, rather than attempt a mend that would not be safe.
Will I be left stranded, or can you sort it there and then?
We sort it where you are. The van carries a range of tyre sizes and everything needed to fit and balance one at the roadside, so in most cases there is no tow and no garage trip. Once you are safely off the motorway, we come to you, change the tyre and send you on your way.
