Nails and screws from Essex building sites and farm lanes often reveal themselves on the M11, where the steady speed through Epping Forest lets a slow leak register on the dashboard. With no services between J4 and Birchanger Green at J8, the answer is the next exit. A tyre pushed from Loughton to Stansted on falling pressure grinds its inner lining, and a hole that could have been plugged turns into a replacement.
In the car park the tyre is levered off its rim and the lining checked. Slow puncture found at home in Sawbridgeworth, between J7 and J8? The car can stay outside the house, near Sawbridgeworth station or on Clarklands Industrial Estate if that is where you work. Send a clear photo of the tread first. A nail inside the central tread area is repaired to BS AU 159 on the spot; damage outside that area means a new tyre.
With the car parked at Birchanger Green or on a Debden industrial estate road off J5, do not drive on the tyre again. The aerosol kit belongs back in the boot; its latex smears the liner and can make a sound M11 repair impossible. See whether the nail sits centrally or out at the tread edge and snap a picture for us. Dig out the locking wheel nut key as well, so nothing holds up the wheel coming off.
