A blowout on the Knebworth climb or near the Hatfield Tunnel is frightening. Bring the car to a controlled stop off the A1(M), and we fit the replacement where it ends up.
The northbound climb from Welwyn towards Knebworth puts heat and load through tyres, and one that has been under-inflated for weeks can let go there with a loud bang. Keep both hands on the wheel, hold the lane and let the car slow before braking gently. With steering left, take J6 or J7. With none, stop as far left as possible, get behind the barrier if you can safely, and phone 999 or National Highways.
Near the tunnel, provided you keep control, carry on through and exit at J4 for Hatfield rather than stopping inside. When the car is safe, tell us the size from the intact tyre. We fit a new one, inspect the alloy for a cracked spoke or a dented edge, and check the other tyre on that axle, which carried the extra strain as you slowed. The price is fixed on the call.

If the car can still be driven after a burst near Welwyn, the B197 over Mardley Hill and through Woolmer Green offers village streets well away from the motorway. Stop somewhere level and visible, then call. Tell us the road ref, the nearest landmark, perhaps Welwyn North station, and which wheel took the hit.
Straight after an A1(M) blowout, hazards on. With the car stopped, everyone exits on the left, climbs the barrier, keeps well back and rings 999 or National Highways; no one walks along the A1(M) towards a junction. Inside the Hatfield Tunnel, where there is no hard shoulder, abandon the car and reach for the tunnel's emergency telephone. Rolling a Stevenage-bound car on its bare rim destroys the wheel, so if it will not steer it gets recovered. Later the rim and remaining tyres are checked.
