Getting the right tyre first time

Read the full sidewall before you ring about A1(M) commuter tyres: after the size come a load figure and a speed letter, and look for XL or run-flat marks too. Both tyres across one axle should be the same model, so a single worn front usually means buying a pair. Keep the locking key in the car rather than in a kitchen drawer in Potters Bar. Your own drive off J2, or a staff bay at Hatfield Business Park via J3, makes the easiest spot.

Run-flat tyres and the A1(M)

Tyres stamped RFT, SSR or ZP need a run-flat replacement. If a run-flat warning comes on near Hatfield, leave at J3 northbound or J4 southbound rather than entering the tunnel, and use Hatfield Business Park roads or the Galleria car park. Elsewhere on the A1(M), keep to the handbook's speed and distance as far as Baldock services at J10. Stranded? Barrier, then 999.

A workplace or retail car park off J4 is a good setting, provided the van can park alongside and the site owner is happy. Book a time, tell us which car park and bay row, and the tyres arrive already in your size.

Which tyres suit a daily A1(M) commute from Stevenage to London?

High motorway mileage generally justifies spending on a mid-range or premium model with a strong wet-grip grade on its label. If the car does short hops around Stevenage instead, a budget tyre may be enough. We lay out all three on the phone.

Can new tyres go on at South Mimms services before I head north on the A1(M)?
