The spur carries little traffic, so a tyre that lets go is often a lonely event with no queue around you. Grip the wheel, do not brake hard and let the car shed speed in its lane. Westbound, Dunchurch at J1 is the nearest exit. Eastbound, rejoin the M1 at J17 and head south for Watford Gap services. A car that will not steer stays put: get behind the barrier and dial 999.

The western end of the M45 drops you onto the A45 by Dunchurch. From there Dunchurch Road, the A426, heads into Rugby, and Lawford Road, the A428, gives more streets to turn into, as does Overslade. Get off the main road and stop in a Rugby side street or a car park first, then tell us the road name, the A or B number and something nearby we can find.
When a tyre bursts on the M45, the road can be quiet, which tempts people to stay by the car. Put the hazards on, steer to the left edge as the car slows and get everyone out through the nearside doors, over the barrier and up the verge. Nobody walks back along the spur. Call 999 or National Highways on 0300 123 5000, and do not grind the rim on to Dunchurch. After recovery, the wheel is checked for dents and the partner tyre inspected.
