The M25 is the 117-mile orbital motorway that rings London through 31 junctions, including the Dartford Crossing in the east. It meets the M1 at junction 21, the M40 at junction 16, the M11 at junction 27, the M4 at junction 15, the M3 at junction 12 and the A1(M) at junction 23, so almost every long journey in and out of London touches it. What should I do the moment a tyre goes on the M25?
Keep the car straight, ease off the accelerator and do not brake hard. If it still rolls, guide it onto the hard shoulder, into an emergency refuge or off at the next junction, put your hazards on and get everyone out on the side away from the traffic. Stand behind the barrier if there is one, then call us once you are clear of the lanes on the M25.
Is it safe to keep driving to the next junction on M25?
Only at very low speed and only if the car is controllable and you have no safe stopping point right there. Driving on a flat or split tyre damages it beyond repair and can wreck the wheel too, so the moment you reach a refuge, the hard shoulder or a junction, stop. Then call us out to your safe spot rather than pushing on any further.
Can you repair it, or will I definitely need a new tyre?
Not necessarily a new one. If the damage is a puncture in the central tread and the casing is otherwise sound, we can often repair it on the spot and you keep the tyre. If a pothole or object has reached the sidewall or shoulder, it has to be replaced. We assess it at your safe spot on the M25 and give you a straight answer before any work starts.
Why is sidewall damage never repairable?
The sidewall flexes constantly as the wheel turns, so it takes stress the flat tread never does. No patch or plug is rated to hold in that zone, and at motorway speeds a repaired wall could give way without warning. So any cut, split, bulge or blister in the sidewall means a replacement tyre, with no exceptions we are willing to make.
