As soon as a flat makes itself felt in east London, indicate, slow and, handling permitting, come off the A406 at the next junction. At Beckton, Beckton Retail Park and the streets near Beckton station are close by; at Barking, Ripple Road on the A123 has residential turnings. Park legally, hazard lights blinking, with every passenger standing back behind a wall or railing, then phone.
A flat found after a North Circular run often has a visible cause: a screw buried in the rubber, a valve stem cracked with age, or a rim gouged on a kerb near Bounds Green. Check all four tyres, not just the obvious one. Resist driving it along the A406 to a tyre shop, which crushes the casing. As for the space-saver, it is a limp-home wheel for low speeds only.
