Blow a tyre on Western Avenue or the Oxford bypass and the road itself offers nowhere to pull in. Grip the wheel, slow smoothly and take the next junction if it remains steerable; the tyre is fitted where you stop.
Western Avenue carries traffic at dual carriageway speeds between the Target roundabout and Denham, and the Oxford northern bypass is similar between Wheatley and Wolvercote. A tyre that bursts there tugs the car sideways, often beside a coach or van. Hold a straight line, lift off rather than braking hard, and indicate for the exit: the A4180 for West Ruislip, Swakeleys for Hillingdon, Marston for Oxford. On the elevated Westway, stopping anywhere before Wood Lane is out of the question.
If the car cannot go on, keep out of the traffic, move behind any barrier and call 999, then TfL on the London section or National Highways on 0300 123 5000 on the bypass. When the car is parked at a safe spot, WhatsApp the tyre size and location. The fitter brings a new tyre and fits it, then inspects the wheel rim for splits and the other tyre on the axle for heat damage.

A burst on Western Avenue means the next exit if it still steers cleanly, not the running lanes. Near Hanger Lane, roads lead into Park Royal and Abbey Road Industrial Park; further out, the Greenford Roundabout on the A4127 leads off towards Ruislip Road and quieter side streets. Should the car be unable to move, call 999 and TfL. Otherwise give us the exit you took and a landmark such as a station.

On the elevated Westway there is no verge at all, so if the car stops there, stay belted in and ring 999. Elsewhere, leave by the kerb-side doors and get behind the barrier; walking along the red route is never safe.
