A nail found at midnight after leaving the M42 at J5 can be dealt with before any garage opens. Out-of-hours punctures are repaired to BS AU 159, leaving the car usable for the morning run.
Night punctures on the M42 can be small ones that a garage could mend at nine o'clock, if only the car were not needed at seven. Someone collecting relatives off a late arrival at the airport finds the tyre soft in the car park, or a commuter home in Shirley spots a screw head glinting after a late finish. The aim here is a proper repair, not a new tyre.
Ring any hour with the car's position off the M42 and a snap of the nail or screw. After dark the repair figure is the daytime one, quoted before NW2 is left behind. Off the rim comes the tyre, the damage is checked for size and position against the central zone BS AU 159 allows, and a qualifying hole of 6 mm or less is plugged and patched from inside. If the tyre has been run flat, we tell you it needs replacing instead.

Night repairs are only done once the car is stopped somewhere legal and clear of passing traffic. Drivers coming off the M42 towards Shirley or Hall Green can wait near Shirley station, Hall Green station or the Yardley Wood Park & Ride. Give us the station name when you call, then the fitter checks whether the puncture sits in a repairable part of the tread.
On the M42 after dark, a patch sometimes gives way to a new tyre. Damage out on the tread edge or up the sidewall falls outside BS AU 159, while a car run flat from J6 to J9 usually has its casing crushed inside. Asleep in Solihull or working a late shift when the fitter gets there? Settle beforehand how the car can be reached, and leave it on an open Knowle drive, not shut in a garage.
