If the steering trembles on the open run down the A491 towards Hagley yet goes quiet again in Oldswinford, the wheels want balancing. The balancer for the job arrives with the fitter.
Drivers here notice it on the same pieces of road: the A451 out through Norton, the Pedmore Road dual carriageway heading for Merry Hill, the pull towards the M5 at junction four. The rim buzzes, the seat follows, and everything calms once you slow for the ring road. A weight lost in a Lye pothole, or an alloy caught on the A491 loop by the Ryemarket, is usually behind it.
Balancing happens beside the car. The wheel is lifted off at the Junction car park or on a Wollaston drive and the tyre inspected for a picked-up nail, a sidewall bulge or an uneven patch of wear, before going onto the balancer in the van and turning until it reads true. Alignment and balancing answer different complaints, and only the second is offered. A car that wanders towards the verge along a straight length of the Kidderminster Road, or whose front tyres are worn on one edge, needs geometry set on a rig at a garage with a level floor. The shake that arrives at speed and disappears again is the balancing one. New tyres fitted in DY8 and DY9 are balanced as part of the job.
