Greenwich drivers meet steady traffic on the A2 Rochester Way out past Kidbrooke and on the A102 down to the tunnel, then crawl through Woolwich and Greenwich town. That contrast exposes a wheel carrying uneven weight: silky at a crawl on Trafalgar Road, then a regular judder on the A2. Rims clipped on the tight kerbs of Blackheath village, humps along residential streets in Plumstead, and tyres put on without a proper balance are the everyday reasons the problem starts.
On an Eltham or Kidbrooke drive, the fitter lifts the car and takes the wheel to the balancer mounted in the van. As it spins, the machine reports how far out it is and where, on the inner and outer lip of the rim. Clip-on weights go on steel wheels, adhesive ones out of sight behind alloy spokes. Book balancing after new tyres, after an internal patch that meant taking the tyre off its rim, or once a weight has disappeared.
