A tyre out of balance makes itself known on the Bedworth bypass rather than on Coventry Road. The balancer comes to a Collycroft drive or a Bayton Road yard and spins each wheel.
Speed is what exposes it. Cars feel settled around All Saints Square and along Longford Road, then start to hum on the A444 towards junction 3 or on the run down the B4113 into Coventry. Weights come off at the Smorrall Lane humps, and the mini-roundabout kerbs on Coventry Road and Newtown Road knock a wheel about enough to upset it. Tread that wears in patches rather than evenly is the other giveaway.
The fitter works through the wheels one by one, each going onto the balancer in the van. Each spin shows where weight is wanting; the fitter answers it on the rim, clip-on for steel or adhesive strips inside an alloy, then reruns the spin to be sure before torquing up. Mention on the phone which corner feels worst and what sort of parking the car has, and the charge is settled there.
Driveways in Collycroft, Goodyers End, Mount Pleasant and Bedworth Woodlands, plus the staff parking at Bayton Road units while a shift runs. Car parks at the Leisure Centre and Miners' Welfare Park are level enough. Short-stay bays by the Civic Hall are too tight.

Some shakes are not balance at all. Pulling towards the verge on the B4029 to Bulkington, or a steering wheel that sits over while the road runs straight, means alignment, which is workshop work and not on our list. A wobble appearing only under the brake pedal points elsewhere again, to the discs. Balance a wheel after new tyres, after an inside patch, after losing a weight, or when one pace brings the shiver.
