Smethwick drivers meet an unbalanced wheel out on the Hagley Road, where a hum builds through the seat. The balancer is carried in the van to B66 and B67 kerbs.
Crawling along the High Street or Cape Hill nothing shows. The A456 out past Bearwood, the A457 running to Oldbury and the approach to junction 1 are where a hum or a flutter turns up. Terrace parking with two wheels up on the kerb, the humps through Londonderry and Uplands and the broken edges near Windmill Lane are all good at knocking a balance weight clean off a rim.
Because most of this is street work, the fitter jacks one corner from the roadside, takes the wheel off and clamps it on the balancer in the van. It spins, reads inner and outer planes and points to where weight is wanted; clip-ons for steel, adhesive strips hidden inside an alloy. One further rotation proves the correction; after that a torque wrench takes each nut to its stated setting.
Cape Hill, Windmill Lane and Rolfe Street terraces work when a neighbour leaves a kerb gap, and Bearwood has drives. The two station car parks are operator run, so ask first. Nothing is done on the M5 or the Hagley Road itself.
